The game follows a complex system of the day and night cycle with varying degrees of lights per the particular time period. Here’s a short guide to understanding the same.
Day and Night cycles
There are 4 time periods in Minecraft. These are Daytime, Nighttime, Dawn(sunrise) and Dusk(sunset). These periods make up the Day and Night cycles of the game. Now let’s get understand each period better:
Daytime: Daytime, as we know it, is during the morning when the sun is at its highest. The brightness level of the game is set at level 15, and most things that are out in the sun are visible. The sun is a vital element in the growth of plants, but mushrooms need a darker environment to cultivate. During Daytime, Passive mobs can spawn anywhere when their specific requirements are fulfilled. Hostile mobs, however, do not spawn outside but can be found in caves and dark areas. Daytime lasts about 10 minutes.
Nighttime: Nighttime in Minecraft is when the player usually sleeps. The brightness of the game will reduce from 15 to 4 gradually(read: Dusk). As far as Mobs are concerned, Passive mobs will not spawn anywhere until it’s Daytime again. Hostile mobs, on the other hand, will be freely available to spawn anywhere. This is the same for plants and mushrooms, where plants will not grow but Mushrooms will. Nighttime usually lasts about 7 minutes.
Dawn(sunrise): Dawn is the term used to describe the gradual rise between the sun’s breaking the horizon to Daytime. During dawn, we see the sky change from orange to light blue. Mobs will not be affected largely as they will spawn when their requirements are satisfied. Dawn lasts about 90 seconds.
Dusk(sunset): Dusk is the term used to describe the gradual drop of the sun from Daytime to Nighttime. Dusk sees the light level decrease as the time approaches Nighttime, from 15 to 4. The colors will turn from orange to dark blue. Mobs will not be affected as long as their requirements are met. Dusk, like its counterpart Dawn, lasts about 90 seconds as well.
The entire Minecraft day adds up to about 20 minutes.
