Imagine sitting down to play Forza Motorsport, eager to race on stunning tracks and showcase your driving skills, only to find that the game stubbornly remains in windowed mode. The issue of not being able to launch the game in fullscreen mode has been a concern for many ever since the game was released. Even after adjusting settings within the game, players are unable to switch to fullscreen mode, thereby having to settle for a less-than-immersive gaming experience. So, if you too are dealing with the same problem, you have landed on the right page.
For some players facing this issue, despite configuring the video settings and enabling fullscreen via the in-game settings, their attempts to make the game fullscreen remained unfruitful. Even when using the “Alt + Enter” shortcut within the game, it results in a Windows error sound. So what’s the deal here? And is there any fix yet? More details are shared below.
Forza Motorsport Unable to Launch in Fullscreen Mode Issue: Is there any fix yet
As of writing this article, there is no official fix for this issue. However, a developer did respond to a post about this error and suggested a workaround that seems to work for many. Apart from that, issues like this, where the game refuses to run in fullscreen mode, are not unique to Forza Motorsport. In fact, it is one of the most common errors in PC games. So, we do have some workarounds for this issue.
Restart and Run as Admin
One workaround that you should try first is to restart your PC and run the game with administrator privileges. This simple action may help resolve the problem, allowing players to enjoy the game in fullscreen mode as intended. So, reboot your PC, and before launching the game again, right-click on the game’s .exe and head to Properties. In the Compatibility tab, check the box that says “Run as administrator”. After that, open the game and see if you can play in full-screen mode.
Use Dedicated GPU (Nvidia Control Panel Method)
This workaround was suggested by Saracchini on Steam and was also vouched for by the developer. This fix aims to ensure that Forza Motorsport utilizes the dedicated GPU of your system for optimal gaming performance and, importantly, runs in full-screen mode. So, for this workaround:
- Open the Nvidia Control Panel on your PC.
- Navigate to the 3-D Settings tab, and under the Program Settings tab, select the Forza Motorsport game from the drop-down menu. Now, make sure that the High-Performance Nvidia Processor option is selected in the Preferred Graphics Processor setting.
- Apply the changes, and then launch the game.
Use Dedicated GPU (Windows method)
This method leverages Windows System Settings to prioritize high performance for the Forza Motorsport executable file, potentially resolving the windowed mode issue, as suggested by Falconer. To do this,
- Open your Windows System Settings.
- Access the “Display” section.
- Look for the “Graphics” setting and select it.
- Now, from the list of installed applications, find Forza Motorsport. If it is not available, click on the Browse option, head over to the game’s installation folder, and add the forza_steamworks_release_final.exe file.
- Once added, select Forza Motorsport from the list, and click on Options. Now, set it to “High Performance”.
Update your GPU
As a responsible PC gamer, it is your duty to keep your system’s drivers up to date, especially the GPU drivers. So, if you haven’t bothered to check for an update, now is the time to do so. If you don’t know how to do that, just head to the official website of the manufacturer of your graphics card (Nvidia or AMD). After that, look for the drivers for your specific model. If there are updates available, download and install them before trying to launch the game again.
Lastly, it is possible that this issue is only with players using Nvidia GPUs. But as of now, it cannot be said for sure, and regardless of your GPU manufacturer, if you are not able to run the game in full-screen mode, try the workarounds given above.
