Cyberpunk 2077 (2.0) Unable to Start a new game issue: Is there any fix yet

With Phantom Liberty out now, CDPR will be focusing the majority of its development on the sequel and other Witcher projects. Rocked by a poor launch, Cyberpunk 2077 is now more or less free of all those major issues that affected its release. Phantom Liberty has also helped improve the game’s performance, and for that, CDPR deserves some praise. However, this new 2.0 update for the game has also led to the surfacing of certain issues. One of which is the “unable to start a new game” issue that many have reported encountering.

The issue here is that when players try to start a new run by clicking on the “New Game” option, nothing happens. Other functions work just fine, but this one does not. Without this option, there is no way to start the game from scratch, and that’s quite annoying. So, if you are encountering a similar issue, here’s everything you need to know.

As of now, CDPR is yet to release an official fix for this issue. So, players will have to follow the workarounds mentioned below and hope at least one of them works.

Get rid of mods –

There have been reports of mods causing lots of issues in the game. While this isn’t a large-scale issue, we still recommend that you either remove or update your mods. Unless you are using only a handful of mods, it will be nigh impossible to find the one mod causing this issue. So, we recommend that you first update your mods. Check if the issue persists. If yes, then it is time to delete or disable all mods. After this, launch the game again and check whether the New Game option works.

Repair the game’s files –

Sometimes, a game’s files can go missing or get corrupted due to a myriad of reasons. This can result in issues like the one we are discussing. The only way to fix this is to simply repair the game files.

For Steam –

  • Open Steam and go to the Library.
  • Find Cyberpunk 2077 and right-click on it.
  • Select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.

For Epic Games –

  • Open the Epic Games Launcher and click on Library located in the left panel.
  • Click on the three dots next to the game.
  • Select Manage > Verify.

GOG –

  • Open GOG Galaxy Launcher and head to Owned Games.
  • Right-click on Cyberpunk 2077.
  • Select Manage Installation > Verify/Repair.

Delete a certain folder –

As stated here, this player was able to fix the issue by deleting a certain folder in the game’s directory, and to no surprise, it’s the mods folder. Now, this method is only for players who have mods installed. So, the first thing you need to do is delete the mod folder in the game’s installation directory. The mod folder will be located at the following path: Cyberpunk2077\archive\pc\mod. After that’s done, launch the game and see if you still face the same issue.

Start the game via its .exe file –

A player was able to bypass this particular issue by launching the game through its .exe file. If you haven’t tried this, we suggest you do so. Just visit the game’s installation directory and follow the given path: Cyberpunk 2077\bin\x64\Cyberpunk2077.exe. Now, right-click on the .exe and select Open. Additionally, you can also try selecting the “Run as administrator” option.

Redownload –

It’s the final workaround that might fix the issue for good. Now, if you do go ahead with this one, ensure that you have a good enough connection to download the game. When you are ready, simply uninstall the game and reinstall it on a different drive, preferably an SSD. Once that’s done, launch it and check whether you can start a new game. If not, then make sure you have deleted the mods folder in the game’s directory, as mentioned above.

So, did any of these workarounds help you? We sure do hope so. After starting a new game, if you somehow find V invincible, here’s a guide for details on how to fix it. Follow DigiStatement for more guides like this. Also, read: Cyberpunk 2077 (2.0) Thermal Katana: How to get & find
