Out of nowhere, Tower of Fantasy, a new RPG straight from China, has made a lot of talk in recent days, especially for its “great resemblance” to Genshin Impact. Affirmation may be a bit premature given that the game is only in its closed beta.
Tower of Fantasy is the youngest of the RPG family to be talked about in recent days. Straight from China, the game is developed by Hotta Studio and was announced to the general public a few months ago, in June 2020.
Why only hear about it now? The answer is in two words: Genshin Impact.
Because yes, if Tower of Fantasy catches our attention, it is first of all for the many comparisons that have been made between the game and its big brother which is currently a hit all over the world. Could we be witnessing the late arrival of this style of RPG in the West? Will the trend now be for manga-inspired graphics, away from green orcs and leaf-clad elves? And above all, will the gacha system continue to develop in RPGs.
The game is intended to be an immersive open-world with superb cinematics made in motion capture. Tower of Fantasy is a compendium of immense freedom to explore, interactive puzzles allied to a real-time combat system, all serving up a complex story set in a post-apocalyptic environment.
It’s honestly far too early to judge whether Tower of Fantasy is a “Genshin Impact-like” (if tempted that the game actually becomes a benchmark). If indeed the graphic style taken from the manga is similar from one game to another, it should be noted however that the atmosphere of the game from Hotta Studios does not seem as dreamlike as that of Genshin Impact. The game is still in development as it is in closed beta phase in China. We will therefore wait to have access to the game directly to realize its full potential.
