If you’re someone who is also going through this and would like to fix the stuttering and FPS drops, this article is just for you. The community discovered a few fixes that helped them play the game normally and we’ve shared all of them here. Without further ado, let’s dive into fixes and workarounds.

Enable Auto Update

As the devs promised to release patches to fix the performance issues, we’ll recommend you keep the auto-update option on. Here’s how to do this.

  • On Steam, click on Library, and on the left side, right-click on the game and select “Properties”.
  • Click on the “Updates” tab and select the “always keep this game updated” option.

From now on, The Callisto Protocol will automatically update whenever a new patch goes live. After this, make sure that you are running the latest version of Windows.

Toggle DirectX 11 and lower Graphics Settings

If you have severe performance issues, then it’s because The Callisto Protocol has bugs in the DirectX 12 version and is not optimized. For this, head to the Options menu and select Graphics. Then go to General and select DirectX version 11. We have also suggested a few settings that you can change to get an optimal experience in your playthrough.

In-game Settings

  • Motion Blur – Off
  • Depth of Field – Off
  • Upscaling – AMD FSR 2 or Temporal
  • FSR 2 Quality Mode – Performance
  • Mesh Quality – Medium
  • Texture Quality – Medium
  • Texture Filter Quality – Medium
  • Quality Mode – Performance/Balanced
  • HDR – Disabled
  • Screen Mode – Borderless Fullscreen/Windowed Mode
  • Graphics Preset – High/Medium
  • V-Sync – Off
  • Lighting Quality – Standard/Low
  • Shadow Quality – Medium
  • Volumetrics Quality – Medium
  • Particle Quality – Medium
  • Ray-Traced Shadows – Disabled
  • Ray-Traced Reflections – Disabled

Save the changes and the game should perform better with these settings enabled.

Edit the Engine.ini File

There are a few settings that you can’t change in-game and can only be accessed through the engine.ini file of The Callisto Protocol. So, to find this file, head to this path –
C:/Users/User folder name/Appdata/Local/CallistoProtocol/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor folder. Right-click on the Engine.ini file and open it with Notepad. At the very end, paste the following command- [/script/engine.renderersettings]r.CreateShadersOnLoad=1 and save the file.

Start the game and turn off the internet

There is a strange issue where The Callisto Protocol tries to connect to the internet for some reason and this in turn causes issues. After starting the game, make sure to turn off your internet and see if the performance issues persist.

Run the game on a Dedicated graphics card

If you have a gaming laptop and are unable to play The Callisto Protocol at a higher FPS, then it might be using the Integrated graphics. Here’s how to fix it-

  • Type Graphics Settings in the windows search box and click on it.
  • Click on Browse and navigate to the path where the game is installed. Once you found it, select the .exe file of The Callisto Protocol and click on Add button.
  • Once the game is added, click on the Options button and select “High Performance”, and click on Save.
  • Repeat the second step and in the game’s directory, open Callisto Protocol/Binaries/Win64/and select the .exe file in it. Click on Add and repeat the third step for it as well.

Perform a clean installation of the graphics drivers

Performing a clean installation of your GPU drivers can fix major issues in The Callisto Protocol and we’ll recommend this method. Follow the steps below on how to perform a clean installation of GPU Drivers.

  • Visit the NVIDIA or AMD Website and download the latest drivers of your graphics card.
  • Once you downloaded the driver, open the file and click on “Agreed and Continue”.
  • Click on the “Custom” tab and click on “Next”.
  • Check the “Perform Clean Installation” checkbox and click on “Next”.
  • Let it complete and reboot your PC.

Run the game as Administrator

Some games are unable to utilize full access to certain features of Windows which can be fixed by running it in Administrator mode. Follow the steps on how to do so.

  • In Steam, right-click on The Callisto Protocol, select “Manage” and select Browse local files.
  • Once you’re in the installation directory, right-click on the .exe file of the game and select “Run as Administrator”.

Verify the game files

  • If you own The Callisto Protocol on Steam and having issues, go to Library and on the left side, right-click on the game and select “Properties”.
  • Click on the “Local files” tab and then select “Verify the Integrity of Game Files”.
  • Let it complete and launch the game and see if there is any improvement or not.

Disable Overlay apps in the background

Having Overlay apps running in the background can chug a lot of resources and cause various issues in the game. The Callisto Protocol is a demanding game and requires plenty of resources to run so make sure to close overlay apps in the background, including Steam Overlay. Here’s how to disable it.

  • Right-click on the game and select “Properties”.
  • In the general tab, uncheck the “Enable steam overlay while in-game” option.

If you have other resource-hogging apps running in the background like Discord, Geforce Experience, and NVIDIA Shadowplay, etc., close them all. This will let the game fully utilize the resources of your PC and run smoothly. You can also unplug external devices like controllers, monitors, Logitech wheels, and additional USB devices before launching the game. This might also fix the issue.
