Starfield: How to change Language on Steam, Xbox Series X/S, & Game Pass

The wait is finally over. Bethesda’s Starfield is now available to play for everyone around the world, provided they are either on Windows PC or Xbox Series X/S. And with new releases come new questions from curious players. From how to change names to altering the weather, there are a ton of questions that need to be answered. One such question is how to change the in-game language of Starfield on Steam, Game Pass, and Xbox Series X/S. If you are wondering about the same, consider reading this guide until the end.

For a game of such caliber, it’s evident that players would expect a long list of language support options. After all, everyone has their own preferences and tastes. So, let’s see how you can change Starfield’s language on different services and platforms.

Game Pass (PC)

For PC Game Pass users, changing the language is fairly easy. What you need to do is head to the game’s installation directory: C\XboxGames\Starfield\Content. Inside the Content folder, search for the Starfield_LANGUAGE.ini file. Note that the LANGUAGE part of it is meant to be the current language the game is set in. For example, if Starfield’s default language is set to German, it would look like Starfield_de.ini. Proceed by opening the file using Notepad and adding the “sLanguage= [Language code]” line under the [General] section. Here, you need to replace the [Language code] part with the corresponding code for the supported languages in the game. For example, to set the game’s language to Portuguese, add the following line: “sLanguage=ptbr“.

Steam

To change the game’s language via Steam, open the Steam client and then head straight for Library. Find and right-click on Starfield to select Properties. Next, in the General tab, you will see the Language option on the right side of the screen. Click on it and choose your preferred language. Following this, Steam will also start a download of the selected language’s audio files if it hasn’t done that before. If the language doesn’t change, here’s what you need to do:

  • Head to the following directory: “%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Starfield\“
  • Now, create a new .txt file (if it does not already exist).
  • After this, open the file using Notepad and add the following lines:
    • [General]
    • sLanguage= [language code]
  • Next, save the file and name it StarfieldCustom.ini. Make sure to change its type from .txt to .ini.
  • Now, launch the game.

Note: You can also consider changing your PC’s default language to any of the languages supported by the game. This will initiate Starfield to apply that particular language pack.

Xbox Series X/S

Lastly, changing the language on the Series X/S console is the easiest of all. All you need to do is set your console’s system language to the one you prefer and that is supported by Starfield. Next, let the console handle the rest, including the downloading process. Do note that you will need to restart your console after making sufficient changes.

    • Press the big X button on your controller to bring up the main screen.
    • Click on Home and select Settings > System > Language & Location.
    • Now, change your console language to the one you want Starfield to run with.
    • After making the necessary changes, click on the Restart Now button on the right side of the screen.
    • Launch the game to see if everything works as intended.
