Lowe’s is a North-Carolina based building supply and home improvement firm that is known as on of the largest retailers of the nation. It was founded in 1921 at North Wilkesboro by I.S. Lowe and was initially a normal hardware store. Later his son and son-n-law Carl Buchan entered the business and the latter became the only owner of Lowe’s in 1952 and oversaw the expansion to a chain of 15 stores by 1960. The company saw an instant growth during 1960s and 1970s and became a publicly held company starting in 1961 after Buchan’s death. The company sold the products to professional contractors in the initial time and the store design resembled like the small local hardware stores. Robert Strickland was appointed as the chairman of the company in the year 1978 and proposed a marketing plan for targeting do-it-yourself homeowners. In the mid-1980s, because of a national trend, more than one-half of Lowe’s sales were for nonprofessionals in the normal public. It has been in constant competition with Atlanta-based Home Depot and the stores were transformed to large ans warehouse-style buildings.
