Overwatch is one of the many online multiplayer games that entertain the gamers of the world. While no other game can mimic the amount of immediate impact Fortnite had on the gaming community and pop culture itself, Overwatch did come close. Maybe I’ll be Tracer, I’m already Tracer”, referring to a character in Overwatch named Tracer.

Is Overwatch dying in 2021

Being famous and staying relevant might seem similar, but are not. Gamers often find themselves leaving games due to several factors, like lack of new content or lack of support for the game itself. Ensuring an online multiplayer prospers involves a lot of development even after the game has been released. That being said, let us take a look at Overwatch and how it fares against its rivals.

In 2019, the developers behind Overwatch announced the development of its sequel, aptly named Overwatch 2. The sequels PvP will be free for all previous Overwatch owners. The announcement and therefore development of the sequel has put a halt on the content for Overwatch itself. While Blizzard reported a figure of 10 million monthly players playing the game in Late 2020, the lack of content has definitely plunged the game into a decline.

As far as revenue goes, there has been no news about significant increases in the game’s revenue lately. Overwatch reached the 1 billion milestone 3 years ago, in 2017. In 2019, Blizzard reported that the total in-game spending of Overwatch had also surpassed 1 billion. Since then, the announcement of Overwatch 2 and the reasons mentioned above, the game’s revenue might be down from its glory days, but it is far from gone.

Is Overwatch dying? It’s safe to say that the game is far from dying. However, the lack of content will definitely mean bad news for the game. Only time will tell if Overwatch 2 will be able to revive the franchise.
