We are just a few hours away from the launch of this year’s one of the most anticipated game: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Releasing on 12th May 2023, Tears of the Kingdom has been in development for a long time and was even the subject of a delay. But it’s finally going to be released. 2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild drastically changed the whole Zelda franchise. It eventually breathed new life into the franchise, going from a linear style of gameplay to focusing on an open-world style. While some long-time Zelda fans weren’t exactly happy with this new take, overall it was a massive success. And now, more than a few years later, we are getting another Zelda title with more sandbox aspects and an equally exciting gameplay loop. But how big will this game be? How much size will it occupy on the Switch?
Unlike the other two popular consoles, the Nintendo Switch is massively underpowered when it comes to raw performance and capabilities. Well, it is a portable system, but considering the advancement of portable gaming systems, it lacks a lot. Even the previous eight generations of PlayStation and Xbox consoles were vastly superior in terms of their computing power. And at this point in time, the Switch is aging hardware. Well, it is yet to be seen how Tears of the Kingdom will actually run on the device, but we are quite optimistic since Nintendo is an expert when it comes to utilizing its hardware to its best. But how many GB will TLoZ: Tears of the Kingdom take on the Nintendo Switch? Let’s find out!!
How many GB is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch?
According to the Nintendo e-shop, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will take up about 16.3 GB of space on the Nintendo Switch. This is the initial file size of the game, which means it will eventually increase once you start playing. Well, Breath of the Wild takes up around 14.4 GB, excluding the DLC. That’s almost 2GB (1.9GB to be exact) of extra storage requirement. This makes Tears of the Kingdom one of the biggest first-party Nintendo titles in terms of file size.
TOTK has been in development for around 5-6 years (or even less if we consider the pandemic). In the meantime, it faced one delay before being shifted to a May 12th, 2023 release. Many fans were skeptical of what Nintendo has been doing with the sequel but the trailers and showcase leading up to the release have cleared a lot of doubts in the minds of fans. The review embargo for the game is supposed to be lifted on May 11th, 2023 at 5 a.m. PST, 2 p.m. CET, and 9 p.m. JST. So, you can wait until then to see how the game has fared after such a long development time.
Tears of the Kingdom is also supposedly Nintendo’s last big title for the Switch. With the new Switch successor already in the making (if the rumors are to be believed), it will be interesting to see how the game fares with this six-year-old hardware.
