Update: If you have a GTX 16 series GPU, you can run the game using a workaround. First, download the d3d12.dll file required for this workaround by clicking here. Once downloaded, place it in the FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH\End\Binaries\Win64 folder. This fix has been reported to work specifically for NVIDIA’s 16 Series cards, temporarily getting rid of the DX12 error.
Original post from January 24 follows below:
Those owning consoles were privileged to get access to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024. But those on PC were left out since the game was not available on the platform. Anyway, the wait is over now and you can download Final Fantasy VII Rebirth via both Steam and Epic Games. That said, some players have found themselves facing the DirectX 12 error not being supported on their systems error when launching the game. So, if you too are encountering the same, you might be wondering how to fix it. If yes, consider reading this guide for more information regarding the same.
The issue is simple: you purchase the game, install it, and just when you are ready to launch the game, it throws up this error message and causes the game to crash. Now, have the officials recognized the issue? Is this even an issue? Well, we have all the details about this error that will help you understand and hopefully solve it once and for all!
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth DirectX 12 (Dx12) is not supported on your system Error: Is there any fix yet?
Now here is the big reveal: This DX12 error in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth may not be an issue at all but rather a compatibility limitation. One look at the requirements page and you will soon notice that the game is quite demanding. So demanding that your PC specs may not be able to provide it, here is what we mean!
Unsupported GPUs
The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PC version requires a GPU that supports DirectX 12 Ultimate with feature level 12_2, meaning older GPUs like the GTX 1080 Ti or RX 5000 series are not compatible. This is because the game relies on advanced features like mesh shaders, which are only available on newer architectures starting from the RTX 2000 series and AMD’s RDNA2-based GPUs like the RX 6600. If you’re encountering the “DX12 is not supported on your system” error, it likely means your GPU does not meet these requirements. Unfortunately, there is no workaround for unsupported GPUs, and running the game without DirectX 12 Ultimate is not an option at this time. Now, for those with supported GPUs and still running into the error, try the workarounds mentioned below.
Command Line
Some players have had success launching the game by forcing it to run with a different DirectX version. To try this, open Steam, right-click Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, select Properties, and under Launch Options, type: -d3d11 After entering this command, try launching the game. However, this workaround does not work for everyone. If it causes a fatal error, remove the launch option and proceed to other fixes.
Clean Installation of Your Graphics Driver
Corrupted or outdated drivers may cause compatibility issues. Performing a clean installation ensures that old driver files do not interfere with the game. For NVIDIA users, go to the NVIDIA Drivers Website, select your GPU model and OS version, and then download and install the latest driver. During installation, choose Custom Installation and check Perform a clean installation before proceeding. Restart your PC after installation. For AMD users, visit the AMD Drivers Website, find your GPU model, download the latest drivers, and install them. Choose the Factory Reset option (clean install) to remove old driver files completely. Again, restart your system once the installation is complete.
Dedicated GPU
If you have a dual-GPU laptop (one integrated and one dedicated GPU), the game may default to the weaker integrated GPU instead of your dedicated gaming GPU. To force it to use the correct GPU, open Windows Search, type Graphics Settings, and click on the result. In Graphics Settings, click Browse, head to the game’s installation folder, and add the game’s .exe file. After adding it, click the game on the list, select Options, and choose High Performance to ensure it runs on your dedicated GPU.
Monitor, GPU Fix
For PC users, check that your HDMI or DisplayPort cable is connected to the GPU’s output port, not the motherboard’s display output. To fix this, power off your PC, disconnect the cable from the motherboard, and plug it directly into your dedicated NVIDIA or AMD GPU. Then restart your PC and launch the game again.
Update Windows to the Latest Version
Perhaps you are missing out on some crucial updates for your PC. To update your system, open Windows Settings, go to Update & Security > Windows Update, and click Check for updates. Install any available updates and restart your PC. For Windows 11 users, make sure your system is running the latest 24H2 version, as this includes important updates related to DirectX and hardware compatibility.
We hope this was helpful and you were able to get back to the game. For those with an older GPU, maybe it is time to consider an upgrade.
