Batocera Steam Deck controls not working How to fix it

Batocera, a versatile retro gaming emulation platform, has gained popularity among users for its ability to transform various hardware, including the Steam Deck, into a nostalgic gaming console. However, some users are encountering a different challenge: unresponsive controls on the Steam Deck while running Batocera. While others are grappling with black-screen issues, another subset of users are facing difficulties getting the controls to function as intended. So, in this guide, we’ll explore potential solutions to address the problem of non-responsive controls on Batocera when running on the Steam Deck.

Without a doubt, this issue is particularly frustrating as it directly hinders the gaming experience, preventing players from fully enjoying their favorite retro titles. It can significantly dampen the nostalgic joy Batocera aims to provide. It’s worth noting that control-related problems have troubled players in the past and this is not the first time that players have had to deal with this issue. That being said, let’s see how to fix it.

Batocera Steam Deck controls not working: How to fix it

Batocera Steam Deck controls not working How to fix it

First and foremost, there is no singular fix. Rather, we have several potential workarounds that you can attempt, each with varying degrees of success. Just note that, due to the unique nature of individual setups and configurations, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

Restart the Deck

One straightforward workaround is to initiate a system restart. A restart can clear temporary glitches, refresh system configurations, and potentially resolve minor software hiccups affecting control responsiveness. By powering off the Steam Deck, waiting a few seconds, and then powering it back on, the issue might get fixed.

Check Batocera for Updates

Keeping Batocera up-to-date is essential for optimal performance, and checking for updates can be a practical solution to address control-related problems on the Steam Deck. Regularly visiting the official Batocera website or accessing the system’s update settings ensures that users have the latest improvements, bug fixes, and compatibility enhancements.

Delete es_input.cfg

A potential workaround for the unresponsive controls on Steam Deck involves renaming or deleting the “es_input.cfg” file located at \share\system\configs\emulationstation. For Mac users, challenges arose when trying to delete the file on a Mac PC due to permission restrictions. It seemed that the Mac system prevented the deletion or editing of the file. Yet, when a user attempted the same process directly on the SteamOS desktop, the task was effortlessly accomplished.

By doing so and rebooting the system, users may reset controller configurations, potentially addressing the control-related issue.  Also, we recommend you rename the file instead of outright deleting it. You can also keep a backup just so that you are secure when things go wrong.

Connect a keyboard

One more suggested solution is to connect a keyboard to the system. By pressing the spacebar to open the menu, users can navigate to the controller settings and proceed to rebind the controller. While it may seem unconventional, this workaround offers a practical method for users to regain control functionality while accessing Batocera on the Steam Deck.

With the help of these workarounds, we hope that you were able to solve the Steam Deck controller issues in Batocera.
