Being famous and staying relevant might seem similar, but are not. Gamers often find themselves leaving games due to several factors, like lack of new content or lack of support for the game itself. Ensuring an online multiplayer prospers involves a lot of development even after the game has been released. That being said, let us take a look at Overwatch and how it fares against its rivals.
In 2019, the developers behind Overwatch announced the development of its sequel, aptly named Overwatch 2. The sequels PvP will be free for all previous Overwatch owners. The announcement and therefore development of the sequel has put a halt on the content for Overwatch itself. While Blizzard reported a figure of 10 million monthly players playing the game in Late 2020, the lack of content has definitely plunged the game into a decline.
As far as revenue goes, there has been no news about significant increases in the game’s revenue lately. Overwatch reached the 1 billion milestone 3 years ago, in 2017. In 2019, Blizzard reported that the total in-game spending of Overwatch had also surpassed 1 billion.
