Baldur's Gate 3 (III) Cantrips & Spells Explained

So, you’ve started your thrilling journey through the captivating world of Baldur’s Gate 3. If you are familiar with the whole Dungeons and Dragons shenanigans, you will know how important spell casting and magic in general are to the overall game. But if you are new to these things, it is likely that you will find yourself a bit confused about the spellcasting mechanics. Fear not, for we’ve got your back! In this article, we’ll dive into the realm of cantrips and spells in Baldur’s Gate 3, breaking them down into bite-sized pieces to make your gaming experience smoother than ever.

Remember that some aspects of spellcasting will depend on what class you are playing. Obviously, if you are playing as a Warlock, Wizard, or Druid, you will have certain perks available when it comes to casting spells and cantrips. Warlocks, for example, have a shorter resting period for restoring the spell slots. That being said, let us move on to how cantrips and spells work in the game.

Baldur's Gate 3 (III) Cantrips & Spells Explained

Cantrips

In Baldur’s Gate 3, cantrips are a type of spell that characters can cast without expending any valuable spell slots. Unlike other spells, cantrips have unlimited uses, making them reliable and essential for spellcasters in various situations. However, they are pretty weak when compared to actual spells. Cantrips are often considered the bread and butter of a spellcaster’s repertoire. They provide a consistent source of damage, utility, or support without the need to worry about running out of spell slots. Since cantrips can be cast as many times as needed, they are especially useful in prolonged battles or when conserving higher-level spells for more critical moments. What is worth noting is that each class has its own set of cantrips, each with unique effects and properties. And perhaps the best part is that you will not have to rest in order to restore your Cantrips. And to balance things out, there are no healing Cantrips available in the game.

Spells

Each class in Baldur’s Gate 3 has access to a unique selection of spells, and they are divided into different levels of power. As you might have guessed, the higher the level of the spell, the more potent its effects and the more spell slots it consumes when cast. For example, in a Level 1 spell, when a character casts this spell, it consumes one of their Level 1 spell slots. Once all the character’s Level 1 spell slots are used up, they can’t cast any more Level 1 spells until they rest and regain their spell slots. Similarly, for higher-level spells, a Level 2 spell deals greater damage, but it requires a Level 2 spell slot for each casting. These higher-level spells tend to have more significant effects and can turn the tide of battles when used strategically. Resting is an essential mechanic in Baldur’s Gate 3, as it allows characters to replenish their spent spell slots and regain their magical energy. Planning when to use spells and managing spell slots wisely become critical aspects of successful spellcasting in the game.

And that is all that we have to share on cantrips and spells in Baldur’s Gate 3. We hope you now have a complete understanding of spells and cantrips.
