As stated already, this issue has been encountered when launching other games via the Xbox app and luckily, an Independent Advisor on the Microsoft forum shared a few effective workarounds for the same. Here’s our guide on how to implement these workarounds effectively:
Remove Microsoft.GamingServices Package from your PC
While there is no evidence that can lead to this service being the reason for this issue, it has been recommended by the advisor to remove it. So, you should give this a try. To do this, first, go to Start and search “Windows Powershell”. Now, right-click on the first result and right-click on it. Next, select the Run as Administrator option. After this, in the Windows PowerShell menu, copy-paste the following command: “get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers”.
Now, press Enter. Once the process is completed, restart your PC and open Windows PowerShell with admin privileges again. But this time, copy-paste the following command: “Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}”. Once done, restart your PC once again. After the restart, log in to the Microsoft Store and Xbox app and then launch the game to check if the issue persists.
Delete the GamingServices or GamingServices.net folders using Registry Editor
For this workaround, you’ll need to open the Registry Editor by going to Windows Start and searching “regedit”. On the Registry Editor result, right-click on Run as Administrator. Now, inside it, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services. Here, find the GamingServices or GamingServices.net folders and delete them.
Reset Microsoft Store and Xbox App
A faulty configuration can also cause this issue. So, to fix it, you can try resetting the Microsoft Store and Xbox Application via the Windows Apps & Features menu. For this, go to Start and search “installed apps”. Select the first result and from the list, find the Xbox application entry. Click on the three dots and select Advance Options. In the next menu, scroll down and click on Reset. Once done, go back to the previous menu and visit the System Components menu. Here, find the Microsoft Store application and do the same. Reset it and then launch both applications. Now, launch the game to check whether the error code persists.
Delete Temp files
For this workaround, you can go to the Windows Search and type “%temp%”. Select the first result and delete all the folders inside the opened directory. Once done, you can launch the game to check whether the error code occurs.
Run the WSRESET command
Running this command is quite simple. Simply copy-paste “WSRESET” in the Windows Search bar and you’re done.
Remove Credentials
For this, go to Windows Search and type “credential manager”. Select the first result and then select Windows Credentials. Here, search for the Xbl|DeviceKeynd entry and click on it. Now, select the Remove option. Also, remove all the XblGrts and XboxLive credentials. After doing this, you can start the Xbox application and launch the game.
Remove Accounts and Cache
For this, go to the following directory and delete the files/folders:
- “C:\Users\Usernamefolder\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.XboxIdentityProvider_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\TokenBroker”
- “C:\Users\Usernamefolder\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe”
Note: If you are unable to find the AppData folder, that means it is hidden. To make it visible, go to View>Show>Hidden in the File Explorer.
Disable Proxy if in use
For this, press Windows+R to open Run. Here, type “inetcpl.cpl” and press Enter. Next, select the Connections tab and then LAN settings. Uncheck the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box and select OK. Once done, try launching the game.
Use Steam
If the given workarounds didn’t fix the issue, then, well, you can try using Steam to play the game. You will have to download Oblivion Remastered via Steam and then check whether the issue persists. It won’t because the error is related to the Xbox application and the moment you switch to Steam, the error will be gone. But given the game is a whopping 120 GB in size, this workaround can be quite time-consuming (depending on your connection).
For now, these are the workarounds that should help you fix the crashing issue with error code 0x80000004 in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. We hope that you find this guide informative. If you did, consider visiting DigiStatement for more such interesting guides on all things gaming.
