Starfield One Small Step Quest bug: Is there any fix yet

Starfield is certainly one of the best RPGs of 2023, and no one can deny this fact. The success of Starfield by Bethesda has put an incredible amount of faith in the studio’s next big title, The Elder Scrolls VI. But the game is not without its faults. Bethesda’s poor optimization of the game has made it difficult for many in the community to properly enjoy it when issues like infinite loading screen and whatnot keep annoying players. That’s not all, though. Now, there’s a new bug that has been plaguing the One Small Step quest in-game.

This particular quest is the first main quest in Starfield. Encountering bugs in the starting quest itself is not good. The bug mainly affects the stage of the quest where you are supposed to fight against the Crimson Fleet. Due to this, the enemy ships don’t spawn at all, thereby restricting your progress. Additionally, some players also reported being unable to interact with anything when they landed on planet Kreet following the quest marker. So, is there a fix for this? Let’s find out!

Bethesda has yet to put out an official fix for this bug, so we suggest you try the following workarounds mentioned below:

Restart the game –

First and foremost, do a quick restart of Starfield. Next, if this doesn’t help, then try doing the same with your console or PC. Now, check if the issue is still there or not.

Reload a save –

Most quest-related bugs in Starfield have this workaround in common. This is also why we always suggest saving often. Go to the save menu and load the most recent save you currently have. Continue progressing and see if you are able to complete the quest this time.

Fast travel to another area –

Whenever you encounter quest-related bugs, try fast-traveling to another area. It doesn’t matter where you go. Just perform a fast travel to any location and then return to the quest area. Now, see if you are able to proceed with the current quest.

Use console commands –

While console commands can certainly disable achievements, they might be the only way to get past quest-related bugs. So, press the ~ key on your keyboard to open the command console, and enter “GetStage 00003448“. This command will provide you with the Quest Stage ID of the One Small Step quest. Note it down, and enter the following: “SetStage 00003448 [quest stage ID that you noted down]“. This command will set the quest progression according to the stage ID you chose. Here are all the quest stage IDs for the One Small Quest:

  • 80
  • 160
  • 210
  • 250
  • 300
  • 310
  • 400
  • 600
  • 1000
  • 1800
  • 2000
  • 2100

Once you do so, you should be able to bypass the bug and continue progressing as usual. Or, you can use the “CompleteQuest 00003448” command to mark the quest as complete.

Repair the game –

This workaround will check your game files for missing or corrupted files and then fix them accordingly. It’s an effective method and could possibly help you resolve this issue. All you need to do is open Steam and then navigate to the library. Now, find Starfield and right-click on it. Select Properties > Installed Files > Verify the integrity of game files. Wait for the verification process to complete, and then restart your PC.
