Starfield Failure To Communicate Quest Bug: Is there any fix yet

Starfield is finally out for Windows PCs and Xbox Series X/S platforms. The overall reception so far has been pretty positive, thanks to Bethesda’s experience putting out great RPG titles. However, at the end of the day, Starfield is a Bethesda title, and that translates to players facing a lot of issues and errors like the Deimos quest bug and missing weapon assignment issues. Among these is also a major bug, one that is specific to the Failure to Communicate quest.

This quest in particular has two bugs plaguing it. One is where, after conversing with Alban Lopez, the quest marker leads the player to a random spot on a planet with no satellite. The other bug occurs when you dock at the Retrofitted Spacestation. There, after killing all the spacers, the friendly NPCs will turn on you and start shooting. The intended thing that should happen is that friendly NPCs should not turn on you, instead welcome you, but this bug has the quest not working as expected. So, is there any fix yet?

For now, players will have to make do with the following workarounds since Bethesda has yet to release a fix. Try these out and see if any of them provide any meaningful results.

Reload a previous save –

We suggest you start by reloading one of your previous saves. Once it’s loaded, resume the quest and see if those issues are still there. If yes, then follow the next method. Additionally, you should go ahead and make a local backup of your saved files. Doing so will ensure that you don’t have to worry about missing or corrupted files in the future.

Leave and re-enter the space station –

Another workaround is to simply leave the space station and then get on your ship. After entering your ship, promptly re-enter the space station, and chances are you will be able to complete the quest. Additionally, try finding the elevator in the station, as this seems to have fixed the issue for a player.

Shoot back at the recently hostile NPCs –

Since the three recently-turned-hostile NPCs are important characters in the quest, you can freely shoot them along with the other NPCs until they are downed. After that, loot the bodies of the dead NPCs. Once you are satisfied with the loot, return to where the downed NPCs are located. The hostile NPCs will now be back to being friendly and waiting for you. Approach them and initiate a conversation.

Target the satellites and get within range –

If you can see the satellites but the repair prompt doesn’t show up, then what you need to do is target them first and get really close. However, before you start the repair, make sure that you get rid of all the spacers guarding the area.

Restart the game –

You could also try a restart of the game and see if that fixes the issue. There’s a 50/50 chance that this will work. And if it doesn’t, then move on to the next workaround.

Verify the integrity of game files –

By repairing the game files, you will be able to fix any issues related to missing or corrupted files. This could very well result in the quest issues getting resolved. So, start by opening Steam and then navigating to the Library. Find Starfield in there, and right-click on it to select Properties. Next, select Installed Files > Verify the integrity of game files. After the scan, launch the game, and check whether the issue persists.
