Update: The issue has officially been fixed by the developers with the release of the Hotfix 3 update for Runescape Dragonwilds. All you need to do is update the game and the old man should appear where he’s supposed to.
We’ve fixed an issue where the Wise Old Man was wandering off between important quest moments. He’ll temporarily be in two places at once. He’s been doing this for ages, but nobody’s been in two places at the same time to witness it.
Original post from April 17 follows below:
Experiencing the immersive world of the recently released RuneScape Dragonwilds? Despite the fact that the game is currently in early access, it feels quite polished, right? While most of the in-game mechanics are interesting, there still persist some weird bugs in the game. This brings us to the wise old man missing bug in the Dragon Slayer quest. Even though players find themselves at the right location, the NPC just fails to appear, halting quest progression. Anyway, if you too are encountering the same issue, this is just the guide you need. Here, we have shared a bunch of workarounds for you to try and fix the bug in RuneScape Dragonwilds.
Considering that RuneScape Dragonwilds is an early access title, such issues are expected. While the developers have released the latest hotfix for the game, fixing a ton of in-game errors, the missing wise old man bug is yet to be addressed. That said, now you are all left with trying a few workarounds that we have shared below.

Restart game
The first workaround to try is to just restart the game and then load your save to check whether the issue persists. If the NPC is still nowhere to be found, then try the next fix.
Fast Travel to a different location and come back
Head over to any of the available Lodestones in the game and then press E on your keyboard. Once the map appears, select a different location and fast travel into it. Once you reach the location, repeat the process and visit the same area again. Now, check whether the NPC appears.
Dying
If the NPC fails to appear, then you might want to try dying and returning to the quest area to check whether the bug persists.
Create a new character
Another way to get around this bug is to just create a new character in the game and then check whether the issue persists.
Tweak in-game file
In this workaround shared by Steam user RakunvarTTVBTW, you will need to manually tweak the character save that is facing issues. Simply follow these steps for the same:
Note: Make sure to back up your save files before making any changes to them.
- First, open the File Explorer by clicking Windows + E. Now, go to the C drive and open the Users folder.
- Now, open the folder with your Username in it. Here, find and open the AppData folder.
- Then, go to Local\RSDragonwilds\Saved\SaveCharacters. Inside this folder, open the character save you are using via Notepad and then find the following quest ID:
- “QuestId”: “yrRZnkmro-IvH_OmZ3f-5A” and add the following below it:
- “QuestState”: 1,
- “QuestObjective”: “Find and hunt a deer”
- “QuestId”: “yrRZnkmro-IvH_OmZ3f-5A” and add the following below it:
- Inside the Quest Bool section, add the following:
- {
“QuestVariableName”: “WOMTempleHidden”,
“QuestVariableValue”: true
}
- {
- Once done, save the changes and then launch the game. Doing so should make the NPC appear again in the game.
With that said, these are the workarounds you can try to fix the missing wise old man issue in the game. We hope that you find this guide informative. If you did, consider visiting DigiStatement for more such interesting reads on all things gaming.
