PlayStation 4 or PS4 is one of the very popular home video gaming console that has been created by Sony Computer Entertainment. A successor of PlayStation 3, it was announced in February 2013 and initially launched at North America on 15th November, 2013 and later on Europe and South America on 29th November, 2013 and in Japan on 22nd February, 2014. It is an eighth generation console and has been competing with Microsoft’s Xbox One and Nintendo’s Wii U and Switch.
The console has an AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) built on the x86-64 architecture and AMD said that it is the most powerful APU that they have developed. The console puts more importance on social interaction and integration with other devices and services and this includes ability to play games off-console on PlayStation Vita and other supported devices. The controller was also redesigned and improved over PlayStation 3 with enhanced button and analog sticks and an integrated touchpad.
Compared to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 was decently reviewed where people praised Sony for understanding the needs of the consumer and acknowledging independent game development. It also became the second best-selling gaming console after PlayStation 2. A slim version was unveiled on 7th September, 2016 and a high-quality version known as PlayStation 4 Pro was also revealed on the same day and they had a better GPU and CPU clock rate for supporting improved performance and 4K resolution.
Most recently, a news came up that PS4 would officially shut down its servers. There is no official statement on this news but Sony had confirmed on 4th January, 2021 that production has been ceased on everything and only one PS4 model is there for sale at the market. Also, other PS4 Slim models are not being manufactured aside from Jet Black 500GB model. The normal PS4 model that was launched in the year 2013 was discontinued before all this and is not available anymore. So, since PS4 has not been discontinued fully, it cannot be said that the servers would be shut down too soon. Also, the CUH-7000 and CUH-2000 series would not get replenished when all the remaining stock will be sold out. Well it must be noted that PS4 has a huge player base in millions and so, it is hard to imagine that PS4 servers will be shut down.
Right now, we all need to wait for an official statement from Sony on the shutting down of PS4 servers.
