Big updates are coming for Phasmophobia fans this August. Kinetic Games, the British indie studio behind the title, announced sometime back that their popular paranormal investigation game would finally be coming to consoles. PS5, PSVR2, and Xbox Series X/S, to be exact. Plus, the Progression 2.0 update will also be released in the same month, making August one of the best times to play or join Phasmophobia. Now, newbies will find it hard to properly get familiar with some of the stuff in the game, and the usage of Monkey Paw could certainly be one of them.
For the uninitiated, the Monkey Paw in Phasmophobia takes inspiration from W.W. Jacobs’s 1902 eponymous short story. Now, we aren’t going to get into the specifics of this, as that’s an entire essay of its own. All you need to know about it is that it’s an item that is used to make a wish. However, your wish will also come at an enormous price. And so, here’s a guide on how to use Monkey Paw in Phasmophobia.
Phasmophobia: How to use Monkey Paw (2023)
As you might have already guessed, the Monkey Paw is a cursed item/possession in Phasmophobia. Like its original inspiration, this one too grants wishes. However, players will only receive a wish based on the difficulty reward multiplier –
- For 0x – 1.99x, you will get 5 wishes
- For 2x – 2.99x, you will get 4 wishes
- For 3x or higher, you will only get three wishes
Now, to use the Monkey Paw, the player will actually need to speak into the mic. But you can’t just speak some mumbo-jumbo or abracadabra into the mic and expect something to happen. Players need to clearly and audibly speak a wish. Once you do that, certain effects will happen. However, the item can also be used via Text chat to make a wish. Following are the Monkey Paw wishes and their effects:
Monkey Paw Wish |
Effects (Positive) |
Effects (Negative) |
I wish for anything | Will trigger a random wish | Depends upon the wish granted to the player |
I wish to be safe | Will turn off all the lights in the room you are currently in at | Lights will be temporarily disabled and the player won’t be able to turn on the lights |
I wish for life | Players have a chance of reviving a dead teammate | A random still-alive member of your team might die, including you |
I wish the ghost was trapped | The ghost will be locked in its favorite room for a minute | Players will be locked in the room they are currently in and after a minute, a cursed hunt will commence |
I wish to leave | The front door will be unlocked during a hunt | The player’s vision will be impaired and movement will be slowed |
I wish for clear skies | There will be clear weather | The player will become momentarily blind, while the weather changes |
I wish for fog | The weather will change to foggy | The player will become momentarily blind, while the weather changes |
I wish for rain | The weather will change to rainy | Momentary blindness, while the weather changes |
I wish for sunrise | Sunrise will occur | Momentary blindness, while the weather changes |
I wish for snow | The weather will change to snowy | Momentary blindness, while the weather changes |
I wish for activity | Will double ghost activity or simply a ghost event will occur | Fuse Box will permanently turn off and the front door will be locked for about two minutes |
I wish for knowledge | The player will be given hints about the ghost’s identity in their journal by crossing out incorrect evidence | A cursed hunt will begin while the player’s hearing and sight will be temporarily impaired |
I wish for sanity | The team’s average sanity levels will be increased to 50% | Sanity will drop faster over time and the ghost might move to its favorite room |
I wish to see the ghost | Players will see the ghost in front of them for five seconds | Hunt will start and your vision will be temporarily impaired |
Now, do remember that the Monkey Paw is always active when you are holding it. And so, always be cautious around your microphone. You don’t want to accidentally make a wish you don’t want, do you!?
