The severe lack of cozy-sim MMOs is somewhat negated by Singularity 6 Corporation’s debut title, Palia. Inspired by farm/cozy-sim giants like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, the game has just entered its open beta phase as of August 10, 2023. While the overall game has been a banger to play, there are certain aspects of it that some players have been having a particularly hard time with. Unlocking Gardening is one such thing.
Although there are many skills in the game, a majority of players will devote most of their time to gardening. Why? Because it’s essentially a perpetual money-printing skill. Just take a look at Stardew Valley and the farming mechanics there. Players can generate an obscene amount of money simply by focusing on farming, or in this case, gardening, alone. And so, here’s a guide explaining how you can unlock this skill in Palia.
Palia Gardening Guide: How to Unlock Gardening
Unlocking Gardening is pretty straightforward in Palia. All you need to do is complete the “Welcome to Palia” tutorial quest. Once you have created your custom character in the character creation menu, enter the game. Following a cutscene, you will get to meet Jina and Hekla. Speak with Jina, after which the game will automatically start the “Welcome to Palia” tutorial quest.
Welcome to Palia
Since you start the game in a cave in Phoenix Falls, you will have to first make your way to Kilima Village. Once you are in the village, go to the town square, and from there, head to Ormuu’s Horn Inn. Speak to Ashura, who runs the Inn, and he will give you a Makeshift Axe. Furthermore, he will also mark the miner Hodari’s location on your map. Your next task is to meet with Hodari outside of the village, in the mountains, north of Chappa Crossing.
After meeting with Hodari, he’ll hand you a Makeshift Pickaxe and tell you to clear the housing plot. Do so, and you will both learn and level up your mining skills when clearing the plot. You can also clear trees and gather lumber. This will help you level up your foraging skills. After you have cleared up your housing plot and chopped down the trees, initiate a conversation with Hodari, following which he will hand you a crafting worktable. You will also be given a tent recipe and instructions on how to craft a tent.
Next, craft and place your humble abode on the beautiful lands of Palia. Soon the town’s mailperson, Auni, will come to visit you and teach you about the mail system. Auni will also inform you about emails that you need to collect from the Mailbox. Opening your first mail will get you a Makeshift Fishing Rod, 20 Makeshift Arrows, and one Makeshift Bow. After receiving all these heartwarming gifts from fellow Palians, go and meet with Auni once again. He will then give you several other items as a housewarming gift. Once his conversation with you ends, you will have completed the Welcome to Palia quest.
Gardening 101
Once you complete the Welcome to Palia quest, you can unlock Gardening. Leave your housing plot for now so that you can go meet with Badruu. Speak to him and choose the “Can you teach me to garden?” option. Badruu will comply with your request and will tell you to meet him at your Housing Plot. This is the starting point of the Gardening 101 quest, where you will learn the ropes of, you guessed it, gardening.
Once you are back at your place, interact with Badruu, and he will give you 2x Soil and 1x Makeshift Hoe. A mini window will open on the left side of the screen, giving you a tutorial of sorts. Continue tapping Next until the window disappears. Now, head to the plot and place the gardening plot (Soil) you got from Badruu. After this, equip the Makeshift Hoe and start tilling. Do note that you have to till both gardening plots. Once that’s done, talk to Badruu once again, and he will give you the following as a housewarming gift:
- 1x Makeshift Watering Can
- 4x Onion Seed
- 4x Carrot Seed
Plant those seeds in the freshly tilled soil, and then water them accordingly. If you find yourself out of water for your watering can, you can refill it by going to the nearby pond. Keep watering your plants until they are fully grown. Once that happens, gather them and then go talk to Badruu. Tell him about your recent accomplishment, and he will congratulate you. You will also receive 5x Renown and 1x Wheat Seed. This marks the completion of the Gardening 101 quest, and now you can continue gardening in the game as much as you like.
