Huawei has been banned to use GMS (Google Mobile Services) ever since the U.S Commerce Department banned Huawei in May 2019.Then, US President Donald Trump, put the company in a list called Entity List, along with companies restricted to do business with U.S companies. Thus, the Huawei ban began.
Since May 2019, Huawei has been probhited to pre-install Google apps like Play Store, Youtube, Gmail. etc in their phones. So, the need of HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) arised. HMS is actually just the alternative to GMS. It is same as how Google has some of its essential apps installed on phones out of the box. HMS also contains apps and services that come bundled with your phone.
HMS consists of 7 main services which are Huawei ID, Cloud, AppGallery, Themes, Huawei Video, Browser and Assistant. It also has HMS core which helps in the development of apps. As of January 2020, HMS core has 50,000 integrated apps while GMS with the Play Store had over 3 million apps. HMS Core has some of the important API’s without which many Android apps just won’t work. This is why Google Apps can be side loaded on Huawei phones and run smoothly. The company with HMS core has launched thousands of API’s twhich will help the developers to develop apps easily. Huawei is working in many markets to make sure all apps which people daily use can be installed on Huawei devices.
Huawei has claimed that it would take ‘less than 10 minutes’ to port apps from Google’s Play Store to Huawei’s AppGallery. HMS AppGallery has been used by 650 million monthly active users in March 2020. The AppGallery is available in 170 countries with 78 different languages. HMS is available on Honor 9X Pro, View 30 Pro and many launched even before the ban.
