Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2 is now Sony’s biggest PC release to this day, beating other popular titles like God of War, The Last of Us, and Horizon Zero Dawn. Released on February 8, 2024, for Windows and PlayStation 5, the game has already sold close to 3 million copies as of February. And this is despite all the issues Helldivers 2 had during its launch. While the developers have improved the game a lot, it still suffers from some major problems. Of which a major one happens to be the “lobby is private” error.
The issue here is simple. Whenever players try to join a party, they are unable to do so and get the “Lobby is private. You do not have permission to join.” message. Why does it happen? Well, we don’t really know. Anything ranging from servers being under maintenance to matchmaking privacy can be a cause here. Furthermore, for a game entirely focused on co-op multiplayer, this issue can’t be ignored. So, is there a fix for it? Well, let’s go ahead and find out.
Helldivers 2 lobby is private error: How to fix it?
You can use the following workarounds to fix this issue. Try these and see if any of them are of help.
Launch a mission and switch to Public –
A player was able to fix this particular issue by simply starting a mission and then switching from Friends Only to Public. Next, have a friend join you, following which you switch back to Friends only. Now, if this “fix” isn’t of help, then we suggest taking a look at another fix.
Have your friend send you an in-game request –
You can also have your friend send you a request from the game itself instead of using Steam Friends to do so. This is what some players used to circumvent this issue, so it might be for you. If it doesn’t, try another workaround. Additionally, if you are using Steam Friends, then make sure there are more than two characters in your name and no special characters.
Restart –
The restart method is also something you can give a try. Simply restart both the game and your PC and see if it works. For some players, this particular workaround has worked, so give it a try. However, if the issue remains, you can switch to another workaround.
Check the server status –
This issue could also be the result of Helldivers 2 servers being under maintenance and such. So, what we recommend you do is check the game’s server status. Since there’s no dedicated server status website for the game, you will have to follow the official Helldivers 2 Twitter account and look for any server-related post for updates.
