Dread Delusion crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it

It was a long wait but Lovely Hellplace’s Dread Delusion is finally here. Inspired by the classic RPGs of the 2000s, like the early Elder Scrolls series, Dread Delusion is an open-world RPG, made in a retro 3D aesthetic. The game first entered early access in 2022 via Steam, with Version 1.0 released just recently on May 14, 2024, for PC. And since it’s available on PC, many players have also opted to enjoy it on their PC handhelds, such as the Steam Deck. Unfortunately, some players have complained about an issue with the game on the Steam Deck. Specifically, Dread Delusion keeps crashing on the Deck a lot. So, if you are encountering the same issue, here’s everything you need to know about getting rid of it.

Currently, Dread Delusion seems to be suffering from a pretty big technical issue. The game is very much limited by CPU right now, and the developers have communicated that they are working to fix this CPU-limitation issue. As for this crashing issue, it could be due to a number of reasons, ranging from missing files to this CPU-limitation issue. So, is there a fix for this? Well, let’s go ahead and find out.

Dread Delusion Crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it

Currently, there are no official workarounds for this issue and as such, you will have to use the following workarounds. Try these and see if any one of them is of help.

Restart the Deck –

The very first thing that we recommend you do is restart your Steam Deck. Sometimes a simple restart is enough to resolve an issue, so start with this. If the issue persists, then you can switch to a different workaround.

Force Proton –

Players can also try forcing Proton on the game and then running it. To do this, select Dread Delusion from your Library and press the Options button. Next, select Properties and then switch to the Compatibility section. Check the Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool option. You can now select a Proton layer from the drop-down menu located below. Start with Proton Experimental and if it doesn’t help, then switch to another proton version.

Verify files –

The issue here can also be the result of Dread Delusion having some missing or corrupted files. This can be fixed by verifying and repairing the game files. Basically, you need to go into the Properties settings of Dread Delusion and switch to the Installed Files tab. Click on Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.

Turn on VSync –

This is more of a performance workaround. However, it could potentially help you with this issue too. Essentially, what you need to do is disable the frame limit in the Steam Deck quick menu and enable VSync in the in-game settings. Furthermore, if you are comfortable running the game at 30 fps, then we suggest you do so too.

Switch to Desktop Mode –

You can also try switching to Desktop Mode and running the game there. This is a common workaround for issues like this, so do give it a try. In order to switch to Desktop Mode, you will need to press the Steam button on your Deck. Next, scroll down to the Power section and click on it. From the options present, select Switch to Desktop. You are now in the Deck’s Desktop Mode. Additionally, you can also try switching to Desktop Mode, changing the game’s resolution, and then getting back to Gaming Mode as shared by this player.

Reinstall –

If the aforementioned workarounds aren’t of help, then you can use this reinstall method. Simply uninstall the game from your Deck and then start a new download. Once it’s installed, launch the game, and hopefully the issue will be gone.

Well, that’s all the workarounds we have for this issue. You can also take a quick look here if Hades II crashes constantly on your Deck. And for more interesting guides like this, keep following DigiStatement. Also read: Ultrakill crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it
