Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Fog: How to disable it

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Fog How to disable it

If you’ve been wandering through the oddly foggy world of Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and wondering if someone cranked up the mist machine to max, you’re not alone. The fog effects in the game can look stylish, but for some, it’s more like playing through a smudged lens. Whether it’s tanking your frame rate or just not vibing with your aesthetic, here’s how you can tone it down or disable it completely for clearer and maybe smoother gameplay.

Many players prefer to disable fog effects in games like Clair Obscur Expedition 33 for a variety of reasons, mainly because of performance and visual clarity. Fog can obscure important environmental details, reduce visibility during exploration or combat, and sometimes create a hazy, overprocessed look that doesn’t appeal to everyone. On lower-end systems, it can also be a needless GPU strain, shaving off precious frames per second. So, how to disable it?

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Fog: How to disable it

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Fog How to disable it

To disable fog in Clair Obscur Expedition 33, you won’t find a simple toggle in the in-game settings. Instead, you’ll need to manually tweak the game’s configuration file. This means locating the Engine.ini file hidden deep in your system folders and adding a few specific commands to it. It might sound a bit technical, but it’s a straightforward process once you know where to look and what to add. Just follow the steps below, and you should be ok!

How to disable fog

  • Navigate to the config folder of the game: Go to the following path on your PC:
    • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Sandfall\Saved\Config\Windows
  • You can paste this into your File Explorer address bar to go directly there.
  • Create or Edit the Engine.ini File: If an Engine.ini file already exists, right-click and choose Open with>Notepad. If it does not exist, right-click inside the folder → New > Text Document, then rename it to Engine.ini (make sure it’s not Engine.ini.txt).
  • Add Fog Disabling Lines: Open the file using Notepad and paste the following lines:
    • [SystemSettings]
    • r.Fog=0
    • r.VolumetricFog=0
  • r.Fog=0 disables all fog effects, while r.VolumetricFog=0 specifically disables the volumetric fog (like mist or atmospheric godrays).
  • Save and Set to Read-Only: Save the file (Ctrl+S). After this, right-click the file → Properties → check Read-only, then click Apply. This prevents the game from overwriting your changes.
  • Launch the Game and Check: Finally, start the game and explore areas where fog was previously present. The change should now be visible.

Note

Keep in mind that disabling fog can make the game look cleaner and increase performance but may also alter the atmosphere or cause overly bright/red visual effects in certain areas, as some colors are linked to fog layers. Try r.VolumetricFog=0 on its own first if you still want a bit of ambient depth.

That is all we have to share on this matter. Since Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is still being actively developed, there’s hope that easier, in-game options for tweaking visuals, like disabling fog, will be added in future updates. Until then, editing the .ini files remains the only way to fine-tune these settings.
