Cities Skylines 2 (II) Screen Flickering Issue Is there any fix yet

Cities Skylines 2, a highly popular city-building simulation game, is out now on PC, with the console versions scheduled for release in 2024. With its immersive gameplay and stunning graphics, it offers an unparalleled experience in creating and managing virtual cities. However, some players have encountered a persistent issue of screen flickering, which can be both distracting and visually uncomfortable. In this article, we will delve into the screen flickering problem in Cities Skylines 2, explore its possible causes, and offer some workarounds provided by the gaming community to alleviate this issue.

Many Cities Skylines 2 players have reported a screen flickering problem that plagues their gaming experience. This issue manifests as rapid and continuous screen flashing, which becomes particularly troublesome when the in-game menu is open or when the cursor is in motion. The flickering intensifies when looking directly downward on the in-game map, often leading to eyestrain and even headaches. Understandably, this issue has left players frustrated and seeking solutions. So, is there any fix yet? Of course, there is.

Cities Skylines 2 (II) Screen Flickering Issue: Is there any fix yet

Cities Skylines 2 (II) Screen Flickering Issue Is there any fix yet

As of now, there is no official fix from the game developers for the screen flickering problem in Cities Skylines 2. However, the gaming community has rallied to offer their own suggestions and workarounds to mitigate the issue. These workarounds have provided relief to many affected players, allowing them to enjoy the game without the intrusive screen flickering. So, make sure to try them out.

Enable/Disable Vsync

The first workaround involves enabling or disabling VSync, a common solution for screen-related issues. Players have reported that this adjustment can significantly reduce screen flickering. To toggle VSync, head to the game’s settings menu and select the Graphics tab. Here, you will find the VSync option. Try enabling it if it’s disabled, or disable it if it’s currently active.

Turn on TAA in Advanced Anti-Aliasing

Screen flickering can be caused or exacerbated by shadow flickering. To address this, players have suggested turning on Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) in advanced anti-aliasing settings. TAA is known to improve the overall graphical quality and may resolve the flickering problem. You can do so by clicking on Options>Graphics. Then, head to Advanced menu at the top right of the Graphics menu and scroll down to find “Anti-aliasing Method”. Here, you can click the drop-down menu and choose TAA.

Disable Day/Night Cycle

For some players, the screen flickering issue appears related to the game’s day/night cycle and how it affects lighting. To address this, try disabling the day/night cycle in the game settings. This simple change has helped some players eliminate the flickering entirely, particularly when the sun sets and lighting conditions change.

Change in-game Settings

Here are the recommended settings to optimize performance in Cities: Skylines 2. First, you can lower the resolution to 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz. After that, disable Depth of Field and also disable Volumetrics for improved performance. You can also adjust Motion Blur, Depth of Field, and Dynamic Resolution based on your preferences, but for a start, try disabling these features altogether.

Those were some workarounds that players affected by the screen flickering issue have been using to resolve the issue. But keep in mind that they are just potential fixes and, hence, not guaranteed to work for everyone. Nevertheless, we hope you were able to solve the flickering issue and play the game without any further errors.
