At the time of its release, The Callisto Protocol had a ton of both technical and gameplay-related issues. Nowadays, though, the issues are a lot less compared to before. But there are still a fair share of issues that players have to deal with. And the out-of-video memory error in particular has been a constant source of annoyance for many.
This particular error mostly occurs when the game is unable to access the video memory of your GPU. It’s a pretty common issue that can affect any other game. And unfortunately, The Callisto Protocol suffers from it a lot. So, are there any fixes for this? Well, continue reading to find out!
Callisto Protocol out of video memory error: How to fix it?
There’s yet to be an official fix for this issue, so players will have to use the following workarounds. Try not to skip, unless you have already used a fix before.
Update drivers –
A lot of issues like this can be the result of outdated or unstable drivers. So, what you should do first is get the latest GPU drivers. Besides that, we also recommend that you update the game and Windows. Once everything’s done, launch the game and see if the issue persists. If it does, switch to another workaround.
Uninstall Razer Cortex –
For one player, uninstalling Razer Cortex was what helped them fix this issue, so that’s something you can give a try, provided you have Razer Cortex installed on your PC. If you aren’t using Razer Cortex, you can check other workarounds.
Run the game on a dedicated GPU –
If you’ve got both an iGPU and a dedicated GPU installed, there’s a good chance that the game is just using the iGPU due to which the issue is occurring. This can only be fixed by following the instructions below:
- Type in Graphics settings on the Windows search bar and open it.
- In the Graphics Settings menu, click on the Browse button and add Callisto Protocol to the list below.
- Next, click on Callisto Protocol and select Options.
- From the options present, choose High Performance and then save.
Switch between different DirectX versions –
Players are also recommended to try different DirectX versions. This particular method does help sometimes, so try it out. To do this, you can just open Steam, right-click on the game, and select Properties. Now, head over to the General Tab, and Type in -dx11 for DirectX11 and -dx12 for DirectX12 in the Launch Options textbox.
Repair game files –
You can also try repairing game files and see if that helps. It’s a pretty common way of dealing with a myriad of issues, so give it a try.
Steam
- Open Steam and click on Library.
- Now right-click on the game and select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
Epic Games Launcher
- Launch Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Next, click on the three dots on Callisto Protocol’s tile and select Manage > Verify.
Delete Engine.ini and GameUserSettings.ini files–
Some recommend deleting both the engine.ini and GameUserSettings.ini config files of the game to fix this issue. If you do that, once you start the game, it will make a fresh engine.ini and GameUserSettings.ini file, which might help you bypass this issue. So, we suggest you try this method. You can find both these files in the following directory: C:\Users\{username folder}\AppData\Local\CallistoProtocol\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor.
Clean install drivers –
Doing a clean installation of drivers is also something that can potentially fix this error. For this what you need to do is download the latest available GPU drivers and then start the installation process. Now instead of selecting Default Installation, choose Custom Installation. Next, checkmark the “Perform a clean installation” option and proceed with the installation as you normally would.
Modify Virtual Memory Size –
You can also increase the Virtual Memory Size and see if that helps with this issue. If you don’t know how to do this, just follow along the steps mentioned below:
- Open the Control Panel and click on System and Security > System.
- Next, select Advanced System Settings and you will see a System Properties window open.
- Now, switch to the Advanced tab and then click on the Settings button located under Performance.
- In the new window, once again switch to the Advanced tab and click on the Change button.
- Uncheck the Automatically manage paging file size for all drivers option and then select the Custom size option.
- You can now set the Initial size (MB) (1.5x of your system’s total RAM) and Maximum size (MB) (3x of your system’s total RAM). Once you are done, click on Set and then OK.
- After this, launch the game, and then check if the issue persists.
