Larian Studios released the full version of Baldur’s Gate 3 for PC players on August 3, 2023. The game was already quite popular as it had been in Early Access since 2020, and fans expected to have a great experience once the full version came out. The game is indeed quite impressive, as Larian Studios has managed to deliver an almost perfect title. However, there have been a few bumps along the way for players, as several errors have plagued the game. Recently, players have reported another error that prevents them from opening the game, and it shows the following prompt: “Failed to load the main menu from the current game mod”. If you are looking for a way to fix this error in the game, consider reading until the end.
The full-version launch of Baldur’s Gate 3 has been quite buggy for a lot of players. Well, a hotfix was released recently to curb the most annoying bugs, but even then, for some fans, the issues do not seem to stop. A bunch of BG3 players have reported that whenever they launch the game, the screen gets frozen and they receive the Failed to Load prompt. Unfortunately, there isn’t a permanent fix for this issue. We have, however, listed a few potential workarounds that might get rid of this issue for good.
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) Failed to Load the Main Menu from the Current Game Mod: How to Fix it?
Erase Early Access saves
The full-version release of BG3 doesn’t support Early Access saves and player profiles. Thus, you’ll need to erase the cloud saves to avoid facing these errors.
- Launch Baldur’s Gate 3 and go to Load Game.
- Browse through the old saves and delete all of them.
- Next, go to the following directory in your File Explorer: Local Drive (C:) > Users > YOUR USERNAME > AppData > Local > Larian Studios.
- Now, find and delete the Baldur’s Gate 3 subfolder, and it should erase the old Early Access saves and player profiles.
- After this, launch the game and check whether the issue persists.
Uninstall the Early Access version
You also need to ensure that the Early Access version of the game is uninstalled to fix the failed to load main menu error. So,
- Launch Steam, and go to your Library.
- Locate Baldur’s Gate 3, and right-click on it.
- Click on Manage, and then select Uninstall.
- Then, once the game is uninstalled, go to your File Explorer, and visit the following directory – Local Drive (C:) > Program Files > x86 > Steam > Steamapps > Common.
- Inside the “Common” folder, erase the “Baldur’s Gate 3” subfolder. This should erase the Early Access game permanently.
- Now, install the game again.
Erase mod files
The Early Access mods in Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be accessible in the full game, and you’ll have to delete these files. So,
- Go to File Explorer and follow this path – Local Files (C:) > Program Files > x86 > Steam > Steamapps > Common > Baldur’s Gate 3 > Data.
- Inside this folder, erase the subfolder named “Mods”.
- Next, go to this directory – Local Files (C:) > Users > YOUR USERNAME > AppData > Local > Larian Studios > Baldur’s Gate 3.
- You need to delete the Mods folder here as well. Doing so will erase all the old mods, and hopefully fix the issue.
Delete the modsettings.lsx file
- Go to your File Explorer and click on This PC.
- Next, access the following directories:
- Local Drive (C:) > Users > YOUR USERNAME > AppData > Local > Larian Studios > Baldur’s Gate 3 > global
- Local Drive (C:) > Users > YOUR USERNAME > AppData > Local > Larian Studios > Baldur’s Gate 3 > PlayerProfiles > Public
- Now, erase the modsettings.lsx file found in both directories.
- This should fix the Baldur’s Gate 3 failed to load main menu error.
Delete the entire Larian Studios folder
Some players have shared that they fixed this issue by deleting the entire Larian Studios folder from their system. So, follow the given path to locate this folder: Local Files (C:) > Users > YOUR USERNAME > AppData > Local > Larian Studios. Now, delete this folder, and then follow the next workaround.
Verify game files
After deleting the game folder, you need to run a verification check on your game files. To do this,
For Steam
- Launch Steam and go to Steam Library.
- Locate Baldur’s Gate 3 from the list of installed games, and right-click on it.
- Click on Properties, and then select Local Files.
- Here, click on the “Verify integrity of game files” option, and let Steam run the check.
- Once the check is complete, launch the game and check if the issue persists.
For GOG
- Open the GOG Galaxy client, and go to your Library.
- Now, select Baldur’s Gate 3, and click on the More button. You can find it next to the Play button.
- After this, select Manage, then Verify/Repair.
