Developer LocalThunk just recently released their latest game, which happens to be a roguelike deckbuilder. Titled Balatro, it’s a poker roguelike that offers you an in-depth campaign mode, a plethora of decks, and so much more. Reviews for the game have been pretty good so far, but unfortunately, Balatro does suffer from some technical issues. And a major one is the black screen issue.
Balatro fans have been facing this issue since the game’s demo. And a pretty common cause then was outdated graphics drivers. But issues like this can also be due to other causes, like missing game files or something else. Regardless of what the cause here is, this issue can’t be ignored. So, without much further ado, let’s go ahead and find out if there are any fixes for it.
Balatro Black Screen Issue troubling many players: Is there any fix yet?
The following workarounds will help you deal with this issue. Try these and see if any of them help in resolving this display issue.
Repair the game files –
An issue like this can be due to the game having some missing or corrupted files. In such cases, the only fix is to repair the game files. And to do that, you will need to:
- Launch Steam and click on Library.
- From your Steam Library, right-click on Balatro.
- Select Properties > Installed Files > Verify the integrity of game files.
Delete settings.jkr –
A player was able to successfully get rid of this black screen issue by simply deleting the settings.jkr file and that’s what you should do too. Just open the Balatro folder located inside AppData/Roaming, find the settings.jkr file and make a backup of it first. Once you have done that, delete that file and then launch the game. If the issue persists, switch to a different workaround.
Switch to Windowed Mode –
A lot of players were able to fix this issue by switching to windowed mode. So, if you haven’t done this before, do so by going to the in-game settings. You can also try minimizing Steam right as you start the game.
Disable HDR –
Some players were able to fix this black screen issue after disabling HDR. And for that, you need to open Windows Settings > System > Display. Inside, you will find the HDR option. Select it and turn it off. You can also press Windows + Alt + B to toggle off HDR.
Update –
Make sure your GPU drivers are updated to the latest version. While you are at it, you should also do the same with your PC and the game. However, if even updating doesn’t help, maybe the next fix might.
Run the game as an administrator –
Players can also try running the game with admin access to see if that works. Basically, all you need to do is right-click the game’s exe or shortcut and select Properties. Next, switch to the Compatibility tab. In there, you will find the Run this program as an administrator option. Checkmark that option and then end the process by clicking Apply and OK.
Reinstall –
Unfortunately, if none of the previous methods are particularly helpful, then we highly suggest that you reinstall Balatro. The reinstall method can be of great help in bypassing this issue, so give it a try once and see how it goes.
