Members of 3Rivers reported that they received letters in a mail that urged them to call a number about a time-sensitive matter on their mortgage. To their credit, something did not look right. The copies of these letters were reviewed and it was confirmed that this is a scam. The letters appear to come from American Home Protect, LLC. and contain the line which says “RE: Three Rivers Fcu, Purchase Date… Potential Laps of warranty coverage.”
The letter then asks the recipient to call on 1-877-906-9725. It warns that failing to call on this number would result in a potential lapse of coverage. The scam is very convincing since it has been sent through the mail. A disclaimer can be seen at the bottom of the letter which says that it has come from “American Home Protect, LLC.” If you look at their page on the Batter Business Bureau website, you will see a large number of complaints and one-star ratings related to this advertising.
3Rivers is committed to protecting its members’ personal information. They do not sell and distribute it to non-affiliate third parties. But information related to mortgages, regardless of what lender the consumer works with, is public record. This is how scammers can obtain anyone’s contact information. Remember that the account number provided in the letter does not match yours. It should instantly alert you to the likelihood of something being a scam.
Calling in that number will connect you to a real person or it can also connect you to automated recording prompts. But you should not give them any of your personal information. Doing that can result in bad consequences in relation to your privacy and finances. The best thing you can do in this situation is, disregard the letter. Dispose it, along with any other junk mail that you receive. In case if you wish to take any further action, you can consider filing a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division.
