League of Legends News: Riot Removes Inter-division Promotional Series

Say goodbye to the horrible promotions

The frustration of being on a winning streak and crashing into the promotion wall will be a thing of the past. Riot Games announced that by 2021, promotions will no longer be part of qualifying matches. “With the idea of improving player satisfaction, we are considering removing promotions across divisions,” says Cody “Codebear” Germain, League of Legends product lead competitive gameplay. He also confirmed that he knows how frustrating it can be to bump into promotional Series when you know you’ve been playing well.

Although this is good news for many angry players, Codebear also explained that they will be reviewing the releasing system and that there is probably no protective shield that allows you to lose a number of games without falling into a minor division.

Another update on ranked and matchmaking improvements that were working on.

We’ve seen some real matchmaking wins so far and division promos are going away next season. Lots more info in the blog if you want to know everything:https://t.co/bfrr1n8NFM

But the questions arise:

What happens to Division Promotional Series?

How will the promotional series between tiers now function after the removal of series between divisions? Will Riot retain the same system where players get free wins for each time they try and fail for the promotion series? Making it the best of three would make it less grindy but a more unilateral solution is Riot’s job.

Decay and Demotion Protections Changes?

The transparency between you getting demoted is a goal in Riot’s update. “This means we’ll also need to look at inter-division demotion protection to make sure that players are able to get where they should be in both directions without false limitations.” As said on the post, it would be nice to know how the exact system works.

Another point we would like to highlight is the Transparency changes promised by Riot.

Ranked Informed Matchmaking and Transparency: Playing matches where displayed ranks are very far apart is frustrating, regardless of how close everyone’s MMR is. We’re looking to modify matchmaking to include rank spread limits and skill level transparency updates. The goal here is to give you confidence that you’re playing with other players who are in the same stage of their climb as you are. Overall, we’d like to avoid those occasional situations where you see large gaps between players’ ranks in your games.
