Starfield Error Code 0xc0000005 on Microsoft/Xbox App: Is there any fix yet

There’s no denying the fact that Starfield is a solid title from Bethesda and that, despite being a new IP, it has stood up on its own and garnered so much praise. Well, at the same time, you can’t deny that the game is marred by technical issues. The 0xc0000005 error code on the Microsoft/Xbox app is one of them that many players are currently dealing with.

This particular error code leads to the application in focus being unable to load properly. The causes can range from outdated drivers to system issues. Nonetheless, it’s not something that should be taken lightly. So, is there any fix for it? Let’s find out!

This is a fairly common issue that most players using the Microsoft/Xbox App face from time to time. As such, the workarounds for this issue are pretty straightforward and easy. So, make sure to try them out one by one.

Update GPU drivers –

For the most part, a driver update is the best workaround for this issue. Type Device Manager in the Windows search bar and then open it. After that, click on Display Adapter to expand the option. Below, you will see both your system’s dedicated GPU and integrated GPU (only if your CPU comes with one). Right-click on the dedicated GPU and select Update driver.

Perform a clean boot –

Type in msconfig in the Windows search bar and open it. Next, switch over to the Services tab, checkmark the “Hide all Microsoft services” option, and select Disable All. Click on Apply. After that, go to the Startup tab and open Task Manager. Disable all startup applications. Now, close the Task Manager and click OK in the System Configuration window. Now, restart the system.

Delete cache –

For some players, deleting the cache seems to do the trick. If you haven’t tried this, then head to the following directory by opening the Run box (Win+R) and entering the given path:

  • AMD GPU Users: %LOCALAPPDATA%\AMD\DxCache
  • NVIDIA GPU Users: %LOCALAPPDATA%\NVIDIA\DxCache

Now, delete all the files found in this directory. Additionally, delete the pipeline.cache file in the “%LOCALAPPDATA%\Starfield\” directory. After all this, launch the game and see if you encounter the error.

Turn on VSync or Limit Max FPS to 60 –

Open the Nvidia Control Panel and click on Manage 3D Settings. On the right side of the screen, you will see Global Settings and Program Settings. Scroll down and search for Vertical Sync under Global Settings, and turn it on. Now, see if the issue still persists. You can do the same via AMD Adrenaline too. If that didn’t work, consider limiting the max FPS to 60 via your GPU’s Control Panel.

Delete .application files from the game folder –

A player was able to deal with this issue by simply going to the game’s installation directory and deleting all the .application files. Following that, if you have the 15 GB Premium upgrade, then uninstall it. Now verify the game files. To do this via the Xbox app,

  • Launch the application and head to the My Library section.
  • Here, select Starfield, and click on the More Options button.
  • After this, select Manage.
  • Now, click on Files and then Verify and Repair.

Once the scan is complete, check whether the issue persists.

Disable PBO in AMD BIOS and turn on Chill mode –

Note: Tinkering with the BIOS isn’t recommended if you aren’t familiar with it. Follow this workaround with extreme caution.

PBO, or Precision Boost Overdrive, helps with CPU operations and works in tandem with Precision Boost (PB). Put simply, it’s there to give you a tiny bit of a performance boost. However, for some, it’s instead creating issues with Starfield. So, we suggest you disable it in the BIOS settings. Consult your motherboard’s manual in order to learn how to access the BIOS. The PBO option will most likely be on the Advanced tab.

If you are using an AMD GPU and using AMD Radeon Software, you can try enabling Chill mode by pressing F11. Do so and see if it resolves the issue at hand.

Update Windows –

It’s highly recommended to download and install the latest available update for Windows. Having an outdated system can cause a host of issues if you want to keep playing the newest game titles. Once you have installed the latest Windows updates, restart your PC, and then launch the game.

Reinstall –

Lastly, if the issue still persists then consider uninstalling the game, and then the Xbox/Microsoft application. Once that’s done, reinstall both, and then check whether the issue persists.
