Players who have been plagued by this error would be disappointed to know that as of writing this article, there is no official fix for this error. However, we have shared some potential workarounds that seem to work for some. While this is only a potential fix, it is definitely worth a try. The steps of the workaround are outlined below. Check them out.

  • First, make a backup of your current game saves. Navigate to the RE4R save folder at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata<your unique Steam ID>\2050650\remote\win64_save. Copy the files that contain “Slot” in their name, e.g., data001Slot.sav and data002Slot.sav, to a new folder on your desktop or in another safe location.
  • Right-click on the game’s icon in your Steam library and select “Properties” from the dropdown menu. In the Properties window, select the “General” tab, and uncheck the box next to “Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for Resident Evil 4”. Click “Close” to save your changes.
  • Go back to the RE4R save folder at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata<your unique Steam ID>\2050650\remote\ and delete both the “remote” folder and the “remotecache.vdf” file.
  • Close Steam completely by right-clicking the Steam icon in your system tray and selecting “Exit”. Alternatively, use the Task Manager to end all Steam processes.
  • Restart Steam and navigate to your Library. Head to Resident Evil 4 and right-click on it again, and select “Properties”. In the Properties window, go to the “General” tab, and check the box next to “Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for Resident Evil 4”. Click “Close” to save your changes.
  • Launch RE4R, and start a new game. Play through the intro section until you reach the first Typewriter. At this point, save your game in both Slot 1 and Slot 2, so that you have two manual saves available.
  • Close the game and return to the RE4R save folder at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata<your unique Steam ID>\2050650\remote\win64_save. Replace the new save files (data001Slot.sav and data002Slot.sav) with your backed-up files.
  • Launch RE4R again and select to load your game from Slot 1 or Slot 2. The game should start from where you left off before the save file was lost.

To ensure that your progress is saved correctly, play for a few minutes and save your game in a new Slot. Check that the new save file appears in the save folder and that the date and time on the file match your current gameplay session. That brings us to the end of this guide. We hope this was helpful in addressing the issue. For more such guides and tutorials, make sure to follow Digistatement.
