It’s great to see that there are still games that are not riddled with bugs and run as intended. Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom certainly proved that point. Released on May 12th exclusively on the six-year-old Nintendo Switch, ToTK is a game of marvelous design and gameplay elements, making it one of the best games of 2023 so far. Players are getting immersed in the world of Hyrule as they build new creations or just explore the vastness of the Depth and Sky Islands. And as in Breath of the Wild, there are abilities in ToTK that will help you throughout the game. Some are downright broken, to say the least.
Abilities in Zelda games, especially the newer ones, play a vital role in the overall gameplay. These are essentially tied to how a player will explore and finish the game. And Nintendo has been pretty successful at designing these abilities. In Breath of the Wild, players were introduced to abilities like Stasis, Cryonis, Magnesis, and more. All these abilities had their own uses and provided many creative ways of approaching a certain situation. In ToTK, players are once again introduced to abilities. But not the ones from BoTW. These are entirely new, and some are even more fun than others. So, what abilities does Link have in Tears of the Kingdom? And how do you unlock them? Let’s find out!

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (ToTK) All Abilities List & How To Unlock Them
The abilities in Tears of the Kingdom are more versatile and fun than those in Breath of the Wild. As such, here’s a list of all the important abilities in the game.
Ultrahand –
Possibly the most fun and creative ability in Tears of the Kingdom. Players have been building all kinds of contraptions and structures using this ability, and it’s all glorious. Social media is filled with players building mechs, tanks, airplanes, torture devices, and whatnot. Ultrahand kind of resembles Magnesis, but it’s way better than that. Using this, players can move, rotate, and lift objects. And the most important of all: join objects together. To get the Ultrahand ability, players will need to complete the Ukouh Shrine located on the Great Sky Island.
Fuse –
The Fuse ability is Nintendo’s way of fixing the weapon durability problem in the new Legend of Zelda games. While it doesn’t completely fix weapon durability, it provides a massive boost to weapon power and shield. All you need to do is select a weapon, armor, or arrow and then use the fuse ability to attach a new material to it. For example, you can fuse your arrow with a bomb flower to make a bomb arrow. The fuse ability is quite helpful in exploration and is one of the best abilities to unlock first. To get the Fuse ability, you will need to complete the In-isa Shrine which also happens to be located on Great Sky Island.
Ascend –
Ascend is fairly straightforward. When activated, Link will “swim” through a solid surface and come out on top of that surface. For reference, Link can use the Ascend ability to reach the top of a mountain or even break out of prisons using this ability. To unlock the Ascend ability, you will need to clear Gutanbac Shrine on Great Sky Island.
Recall –
Recall, as the name itself suggests, is an ability that, when used, reverses time. Do note that it doesn’t reverse time for too long. It’s limited so that players don’t abuse this ability during their playthrough. Recall can be very useful during fights and exploration as well.
Link can unlock this ability by completing the Nachoyah Shrine, which is also located on Great Sky Island.
Camera –
The Camera ability lets you click perfect stills of the magical world of Hyrule. To unlock this ability, you will have to complete the Camera Works in The Depths quest. Once you have all four major abilities, head over to Lookout Landing when you land on the ground for the first time. After getting the paraglider, meet Purah and Josha there and approach Joshua to start the “Camera Works in The Depths” side quest. Once the quest is completed, you will get access to the camera ability in the game.
Autobuild –
Unlike most abilities, Autobuild isn’t acquired through tutorial shrines. But what does Autobuild do exactly? Well, remember Ultrahand and how it can be used to create various creations? Autobuild allows you to rebuild those previous creations instantly without having to do all the legwork again.
You can unlock this ability by completing the “A Mystery in The Depths” quest. To access the quest, go to Lookout Landing and talk to Josha there. Do note that you need to complete the “Camera Works in The Depths” quest before you get access to this quest.
Amiibo –
While it does show up on the ability wheel, it isn’t a “main” ability. It’s mainly for players who have Amiibo. And unlike all the previous abilities, you don’t need to complete a side quest or shrine to acquire this ability. After you get the Ultrahand ability (by completing the Ukouh Shrine), you can use the Amiibo ability as well. Do note that this “ability” is disabled by default, so you need to enable it by going to System Menu > Options > Amiibo. Enable it from there.
These are all the major abilities that Link can acquire in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. You can also consult this little table to get help in your quest to unlock all these abilities.
