Dotemu, the studio behind Streets of Rage 4 and publisher of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, is pretty well known for porting old games and developing new games for those old IPs. One of the recent examples of this has been Pharaoh: A New Era and 2021’s Windjammers 2. The latter in particular was very well received upon its release, and since then, fans have been asking about the next Windjammer game.
For the uninitiated, the first Windjammer was originally a sports arcade game. The mechanics are quite simple. It essentially consists of players shooting a disc at the opponent’s goal zone and trying to secure points as fast as possible. With Windjammers 2, the series got somewhat more popular and as a result, many fans are eagerly waiting to play Windjammer 3. So, when is it releasing? Well, continue reading to find out.
Windjammers 3 Release Date: When it will be available
This is unfortunate news, but at the time of publishing this, we have yet to hear anything regarding the release of Windjammers 3. Moreover, we aren’t even sure if Windjammers 3 is currently in development at all. It’s certainly a bummer for Windjammer fans, but it is what it is.
The latest entry into the Windjammer series was Windjammers 2, which was released back in 2022. The game received quite a positive reception following its release, with critics especially praising the gameplay and visuals of Windjammers 2. Furthermore, Dotemu recently pushed out a free update for the game in October 2023. This update introduced a ton of things into Windjammers 2: 2 new characters, cross-platform play, training mode, a reworked online system, and more. All in all, a pretty good update.
While Windjammers 2 has continued to receive support from Dotemu, the development of Windjammers 3 is entirely another thing. Although Dotemu developed Windjammers 2 and ported the first Windjammer to the PS4, PS Vita, and Nintendo Switch, it doesn’t own the Windjammers IP. The entity that owns the IP is Tokyo-based Paon DP. After Data East, the company that originally developed Windjammers, went bankrupt in 2003, Paon DP went on to purchase the rights to a number of their games, including Windjammers. So, to develop Windjammers 2 and port the original game to other platforms, Dotemu had to approach Paon DP. If Dotemu already had the rights to Windjammers IP, we are sure that the third entry of the series would have arrived a lot sooner.
As you can guess by now, the decision to develop Windjammer 3 currently lies in the hands of Paon DP. Will Dotemu once again develop another new title in the series? Well, that’s the kind of question we currently don’t have the answers to. The only other upcoming game that Dotemu has released some information about is Metal Slug Tactics, and even that is only being published by them. For now, fans of the Windjammers series will have to wait for some time to hear anything related to Windjammers 3.
Speculations?
Well, if we had to speculate, we are expecting the release of Windjammers 3 in 2027, considering the 5-year gap between the first (not the arcade version) and second games by Dotemu. So, if the developers stick to this release schedule, we will most likely get the game in 2027. As for the platforms, we are speculating that it will be released for Windows, PS, Xbox, and also the Nintendo Switch if it manages to stay relevant after so many years.
