ConcernedApe, the sole developer behind the massively popular Stardew Valley, is working on the long-awaited version 1.6 of the game, and fans are beyond hyped. Originally, the update was supposed to be a small one and primarily focused on making modding easier, but in typical ConcernedApe fashion, it’s now become a major update with lots of new content. With a new update just around the corner, many new players are joining in on their farm-life journey, and our guides are here to help them. This one in particular will help you know exactly what those colored dots or circles mean in the game.
Stardew Valley is pretty easy to get into. In fact, the farm-sim genre in itself is quite good at helping you learn whatever there’s to know about it. After all, most of what you will be doing is growing crops, mining, and selling your produce to earn fat profits. But there’s always certain gameplay mechanics or something that might seem just a tad bit confusing to players. And for certain players, these colored dots are what’s making them scratch their heads. So, without much further ado, continue reading to know what these dots mean in Stardew Valley.
What do the dots mean in Stardew Valley?
Those dots near an NPC portrait represent your friendship level with the NPC you are currently interacting with. But isn’t there already a friendship level indicator? Yes, there is. The heart system is the main friendship level meter, while these dots are there for convenience’s sake so that you don’t have to open up the menu constantly to see what your friendship level is with an NPC.
There are currently five dots, or circles, in the game and a purple star. Each dot signifies a heart level or points. You can take a look at the list below to learn all about it.
- Blue: 0-1 Hearts
- Green: 2-3 Hearts
- Yellow: 4-5 Hearts
- Red: 6-7 Hearts
- Purple: 8-9 Hearts
- Purple Star: 10-14 Hearts
To know what heart level you are at, you can just hover your mouse or arrow over the dots/purple star, and the game will display your exact heart level.
As for increasing your friendship level, just keep talking with NPCs whenever you get a chance and offer them gifts from time to time. And the most important thing: don’t forget to gift NPCs one of their favorite items on their birthday. These are positive things. If you seldom talk with NPCs or gift them something they dislike, be ready to lose friendship points. Also, don’t try to hit them with a slingshot, and especially stay away from rummaging through garbage cans when NPCs are around. Linus is the only exception to the latter.
And that’s all you really need to know about what these dots mean in Stardew Valley.
