More specifically, for some players, the Steam Overlay function does not work while playing the game. If you are one of the unfortunate players who is dealing with the problem, you have come to the right place. Read this guide to learn how to resolve the Steam Overlay not working issue in The Witcher 3; here is everything that you need to know.
The Witcher 3 Steam Overlay Not Working Issue: How to fix it?
Steam Overlay is a feature provided by the Steam client which can be accessed by pressing the Shift+Tab keys while playing a game. This feature allows you to get access to a variety of options including chatting with friends and seeing who is online. However, if you are having this issue, then the Steam Overlay will not show up on pressing Shift+Tab. Listed below are some possible fixes for this problem.
Run as Administrator
Make sure that Steam is running with admin privileges. To run Steam as an administrator, follow the steps given below;
- Right-click on Steam client icon from your desktop.
- Choose “Properties” from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the “Compatibility” tab and check the “Run this program as an administrator” box at the bottom.
- Apply the changes.
Now, launch the Steam Client and open The Witcher 3. After getting into the game, press Shift+Tab to check if the problem has been solved or not.
Update Steam
Try updating the Steam client if an update is available. Additionally, updating Steam regularly is recommended to receive bug fixes. To update Steam;
- Launch Steam on your PC.
- Now, click on the “Steam” option at the top left corner of the Steam app.
- Select the “Check for Steam Client Updates” option from the drop-down menu.
- Wait for the update process to finish.
At this point, restart your PC. Once this is done, launch Steam, head into the game, and check if the overlay appears.
Verify Game files
It may be that some of the game files are corrupted or missing. To check and repair such files,
- Open the Steam client on your PC.
- Head over to “Library”.
- Locate The Witcher 3 from your game list and right-click on it.
- Choose “Properties” and then on the “Local files” tab.
- Here you will see an option that reads “Verify integrity of game files.
- Click on it and wait for the process to end.
Now launch the game, and press Shift+Tab, hopefully, the Overlay feature works now.
Switching to Dx11
This method involves deleting some files in your game’s directory. This fix has been shared by players on Reddit, so we highly recommend trying this as it has been successful for many. Follow the instructions given below.
- Head to the game installation folder. It should be at …/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/The Witcher3/bin/x64_dx12.
- Now in the “x64_dx12 folder”, locate and delete the “d3d11on12.dll” file. You can also move it somewhere else, in case you don’t want to delete it.
After this, just launch the game again and press Shift+Tab and the Overlay should pop up.
