The Alters Crashing on Steam Deck

If you enjoy playing survival strategy games, then you need to start gearing up for The Alters. Under development by 11-bit Studios, this latest survival game is set to be released in 2024. We already have a demo version of the game available, and players like it already. Players can access this demo version via Steam and even on the Steam Deck. However, for players who’ve been trying the demo out on their Deck, the experience hasn’t always been the best. Steam Deck, the handheld from Valve, is a popular device among the gaming community. Thus, with the release of every new game, players always ask about the compatibility of the title on Deck. Now, even then, it’s common for Deck users to face issues like crashing and low FPS on their devices. And unfortunately, the situation isn’t anything different with The Alters. Even this latest title from 11 Bit Studios has been crippled by the crashing issue on Deck. But there are certain workarounds that you can use to fix the problem. So, let’s find out the fixes for The Alters crashing on Steam Deck.

The Alters Crashing on Steam Deck: How to Fix?

The Alters Crashing on Steam Deck

We understand how frustrating it can be if a new game continues to crash on your favorite device. It’s natural if you’ve been annoyed with an issue and are searching for possible fixes. Now, in a lot of cases, what we only get are the workarounds that different players have used. In a lot of cases, we don’t hear anything from the developers on the problem. The developers of The Alters are different. Through a post on the Steam Discussion forum, they’ve shared some potential workarounds that we can use to fix the problem. In fact, they’ve also shared that while we can try and use the workarounds to fix the issue, they’re working on finding official fixes to the issue. Here’s what they said:

Developer profile 76561199142059871 shared on the Steam Discussion forum for the game that the officials are aware of the game crashing on Steam Deck. This issue occurs when the players are trying to launch the game in gaming mode. To counter that, here are the things that they suggest we do:

Run the Game in Desktop Mode

Even if the game crashes in gaming mode, it should work just fine in desktop mode. Enter desktop mode on your Deck, and try to launch the game from there. See if you can play The Alters without any issues.

Update SteamOS

If the previous workaround didn’t work, try and update your SteamOS to the latest version. It should be on version 3.6.x for the game to run fine. Remember that it’s just a preview edition, and the main game is yet to be released, so such issues are to be expected.

Now, you can try a few other workarounds as well if you keep experiencing the issue.

Change Proton Version

You can use Proton GE or Proton Experimental to see if the game works. For this –

  • Go to your Steam library and highlight The Alters.
  • Press the three-dots button and go to Properties. Then, open Installed Files.
  • Go to Compatibility and select the “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” option.
  • Select Proton GE and run the game.
  • If Proton GE doesn’t work, follow the same steps, and this time, select Proton Experimental.
  • See if either of these two Proton version works.

Switch SteamOS to Beta Channel

  • Press the Steam button on your Deck and open Settings.
  • Now, select System, scroll down, and select Beta Participation.
  • From the drop-down menu, select Beta.
  • Launch the game, and see if the issue persists.

Reinstall

If nothing has worked until now, the last thing that you can try is uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Sometimes, this simple trick can fix the crashing issue on your Steam Deck.
