Run the Game in Desktop Mode
Even if the game crashes in gaming mode, it should work just fine in desktop mode. Enter desktop mode on your Deck, and try to launch the game from there. See if you can play The Alters without any issues.
Update SteamOS
If the previous workaround didn’t work, try and update your SteamOS to the latest version. It should be on version 3.6.x for the game to run fine. Remember that it’s just a preview edition, and the main game is yet to be released, so such issues are to be expected.
