Tekken 7 crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it

Tekken 7 saw its official launch in 2015 and quickly became a fan favorite among both Tekken and fighting game fans. So much so that, as of December 2022, the game has sold over 10 million copies. While the game is only officially available for Windows, PS4, Xbox One, and Arcade, it seems like Tekken 7 also works on the Steam Deck. And the thought of playing Tekken 7 on the go is certainly an enticing one. However, some players have reported that the game tends to crash frequently on the Steam Deck and that’s something we will be helping you fix. So, if you are facing the same issue, consider reading this guide until the end.

The main reason why Tekken 7 is so prone to crashing on the Deck is because it’s not Steam Deck Verified. Currently, the game’s status happens to be Playable. For some reason, Bandai has yet to port the game to the Deck officially, even though many in the community want the studio to do so. Well, crashing is a pretty common issue so finding the root cause can be quite difficult. Nevertheless, you are here to find a fix for this issue and we will of course help you with that. So, continue reading to find out how you can fix the Tekken 7 crashing on Steam Deck issue.

Tekken 7 crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it

As we stated before, Tekken 7 isn’t Steam Deck Verified, so you will not get any official fix for this issue. As such, you will need to make do with the following workarounds:

Update –

Make sure you have the latest version of SteamOS installed. Moreover, do the same with the game. Now, if the game still refuses to run properly, you can try the next method.

Use Proton Experimental –

This particular fix comes courtesy of u/ArcienMusic. Essentially, what you need to do is download Proton Experimental first. Next, select Tekken 7 and open Settings. Now, click on Properties > Compatibility and checkmark “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool”. After that, select Proton Experimental from the drop-down list, and then restart your Deck. After this, launch the game.

Switch to another Proton version –

For some players, switching to another Proton version has also worked. So, if the previous method didn’t work, try this. You can try switching to an older version of Proton and see if the crashing issue persists. However, if even this one doesn’t seem to help, try the next workaround.

Use launch options –

You can also try using launch options and find out if that works. Basically, what you need to do is use the following launch command: “PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%”. You can access the Launch Options by heading over to the game’s tab on Steam, selecting the Options button, clicking on Properties, and then selecting the General tab. If you are still encountering crashing issues after using launch commands, switch to the next workaround.

Touch a button on the Deck –

For players using external controllers, if the game freezes after launching it on the Steam Deck, we suggest you just touch any button to provide input on the Steam Deck and that will most likely fix that issue.

Switch to Desktop Mode –

For some other players, switching to Desktop Mode was what helped them fix this issue, so we recommend you give this method a try. You can switch back to Gaming Mode and try launching the game, but if the issue persists, stick to Desktop Mode.

Delete your save data –

Save data corruption can also be the cause of an issue like this. Unfortunately, the only way to deal with this is to delete the corrupted saved data. This will mean that you will have to start from scratch, so remember that. Once you have deleted the saved data of Tekken 7, launch it and see if it crashes or not.

Reinstall –

If the game continues to crash after trying all the other fixes, try reinstalling it. So, go ahead and uninstall the game from the Deck and start a new download. After the installation is done, launch Tekken 7 to check if the crashing issue persists.

Well, these are the effective workarounds for you to try to fix the crashing issue of Tekken 7 on Steam Deck. Coincidentally, if you are suffering from the same issue while playing Wizard101 on your Steam Deck, check out this guide. And as always, keep following DigiStatement for more such content.
