If you enjoy playing sci-fi action/ adventure games, then you need to check out System Shock now. Developed by Nightdive Studios and published by Prime Matter, System Shock was released on May 30th for PC players. This is a remake of a popular 1994 video game of the same name. And just like the first edition, this remake version of System Shock has also garnered the attention of the fans. This popularity stems not only from the content the game has to offer, both in terms of the visuals and the gameplay, but also from the exciting new features it has. One such new feature offered in System Shock is the ability to choose from different difficulty levels for each in-game element. However, can you change the difficulty mid-game? If so, how? Let’s find out.
In most games, you can choose from different difficulty levels before you start your playthrough. Where System Shock excels is that it offers players the option to choose the difficulty levels for each in-game task. You can now set the difficulty for your combats, missions, cyberspace sections, and even the puzzles. For each task, you get three difficulty options to choose from: easy, medium, and hard. Each difficulty level will determine how you experience the game. However, many players aren’t satisfied with this, and they’re wondering if it is possible to change these difficulty settings mid-game during their playthrough.
How to Change Difficulty Mid-Game in System Shock?
Being able to choose difficulty settings for the different in-game tasks is cool, but they don’t always help. Many players try to take on as many challenges as possible and set the highest difficulty levels for all four categories. However, it gets tricky when you’re attacked by a large number of enemies during combat because you set the difficulty level to the highest. Or perhaps you encounter a puzzle that you just can’t solve now because the difficulty is too high. While challenges add to the excitement, if you find yourself stuck at one point in any game, it soon kills any interest that you had. Many games offer players a way to change the difficulty settings in between playthroughs to address this concern.
Sadly enough, System Shock falls short on this particular aspect. Once you choose the difficulty level and start a game, you can’t change the settings anymore. The only way to go about it is to abort the playthrough altogether. Only then can you start a new game with different difficulty settings. However, this means you would lose all the progress you made. For most players, this is a nightmare, and it ruins their entire gaming experience.
One can notice the disappointment of the fans in the Steam Community discussions as well. User zarvoxbe expressed their disappointment for the same. The user said that they won’t even consider playing the game until it offers the feature to change difficulty mid-game.
In 2023, not having the opportunity to change difficulty before a difficult fight is nonsense. Sorry but as long as this feature is not added this game will gather dust in my library.

Well, this is all we have on this issue. If demand for such a feature rises, the developers might release an update addressing the same. But we can’t be sure, as they have yet to comment on the same. Anyway, for more relevant content, keep your eyes on DigiStatement!
