Space Engineers has been a favorite among gamers who are into space-themed building games. You too might have played the first installment and loved the sandbox masterpiece, offering endless creativity and exploration within the depths of space with realistic physics and open-world design. Since its inception, the original Space Engineers has had a strong player base that has been eager for more. That brings us to the main topic of this article. Is there a release date for Space Engineers 2 or any other information regarding the same? Here we are with all the answers.
The Space Engineers community has been waiting for any news on Space Engineers 2 for almost a year now. Though no official confirmation from Keen Software House (KSH) has been provided, discussions on Reddit hint at potential advancements in the game engine, with speculation surrounding features like volumetric water and material deformations. However, uncertainties remain regarding KSH’s plans and capacity for such a project. Now that we are halfway through 2024, is there any news on the release of the game? Keep reading till the end to know it all.
Space Engineers 2 Release Date: When it will be available
As of writing this article, unfortunately, there is no release date for Space Engineers 2. Not just that, we don’t even have an official announcement yet. So, for the most part, the community is speculating on the release of the game based on the development of the new engine that the devs are working on. Space Engineers 2 is likely going to be based on this game engine, VRAGE 3.0. So, while there is no official mention of Space Engineers 2, we do have updates on the development of this new game engine, which in turn can give us a slight insight as to when the game might be available.
VRAGE 3 development updates
Keen Software House’s development of the VRage 3 engine for Space Engineers 2 is making significant strides and there have been regular updates on that front by a dev who has been working on the game engine. The dev’s Twitter bio has updates on VRAGE 3 from January 2023. But let us take a look at more recent updates.
In the March tweet update, Keen Software House revealed ongoing optimization efforts for VRage 3’s water simulation A demonstration showcased the deletion of a dam, resulting in water flowing naturally down a valley slope. Despite lacking visual effects such as waves, particles, and foam at this stage, these optimizations signify a focus on creating realistic and dynamic water mechanics for enhanced immersion in the game.
Fast forward to April and we got another tweet sharing raw game footage showing several new features seamlessly integrated into the game, including tessellated tri-planar materials, enhanced water shading, atmospheric sunlight color tint, and improved planet heightmaps.
In the latest May tweet update, Jan Hloušek gave us a glimpse into the integration of various planet features in the VRage3 engine, including a terrain voxel system driven by height maps and detail maps, ray-marched water rendering, and an experimental cloud system.
When will the game be available?
As for speculation on the release date, considering that Space Engineers 2 is indeed being built upon the VRage3 engine, the depth of development, and the complexity of implementing these features, it’s likely that the game is still a considerable amount of time away from release. Given the pace of development and the need for thorough testing and optimization, a speculative guess would put the release date at least a couple of years from now, possibly around late 2025, early 2026, or beyond. However, this is purely speculative, as there is no guarantee that the upcoming game based on VRage3 will be SE2, so all this information is subject to change. Don’t forget to take it with a grain of salt.
