Endnight Games’s Sons of the Forest was released as an early access title on February 23, 2023, and since then has been receiving consistent, amazing updates. While there were quite a few major technical issues at the time of its launch, most of them have already been fixed. What’s more, with the Steam Deck getting more popular, many have already made it their go-to device for playing Sons of the Forest on the go. However, it seems like there’s a major crashing issue with it on the Deck and that’s what this guide will help you fix.
It’s particularly hard to find the fix for this issue since anything could be a cause here. Sometimes it could be Proton compatibility, while at other times the issue might be due to the game not being updated to the latest version. So, does that mean this issue can’t be fixed? Well, of course, it can be. So, without much further ado, let’s go ahead and find all the workarounds for this.
Sons of the Forest crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it?
The following workarounds may be of help to you since there’s no official fix:
Use CryoUtilities –
Using CryoUtilities seems to be a lot of help in dealing with this issue on the Steam Deck. So, just install it and then use its recommended settings. Now, if you don’t know how to set up and use CryoUtilities, here’s a guide. The guide also mentions how to increase your Deck’s VRAM in BIOS, so don’t forget to increase that too.
Update –
Players should ensure that the game is up-to-date with the latest version available. Additionally, if you haven’t updated the Steam Deck in a while, have it updated too. If this doesn’t help, switch to the next workaround.
Change Proton versions –
Changing Proton versions might help, so we suggest giving it a try. Since there are a lot of Proton versions, you might need to experiment a bit. You can start with Proton Experimental and then move on to other versions if that doesn’t help.
Lock the game at 30fps –
Well, locking the game at 30 fps might help you resolve this issue. At least, that’s what u/darkuni did to get around this crashing issue. Just press the (…) button on your Deck and then lock the game at 30 fps by using the slider under the Frame Limit option. Furthermore, have all the in-game settings low and that should also help.
Reinstall –
If the game still keeps crashing on the Steam Deck, we recommend that you uninstall it from your Deck and then start a new download. Now, we can’t completely give you a guarantee that this will work, but we still suggest you give it a try.
Well, that’s the extent of our knowledge on this topic. Additionally, if you want to know how to install WeMod on your Deck, take a quick look here. And for more such interesting guides, keep following DigiStatement. Also read: Sons of the Forest: How to craft/make Stone Arrows?
