Out of the numerous games released in the past decade, United Front Games’ Sleeping Dogs is now regarded as one of the classics. Despite all the delays and budget issues the game faced during its development, Sleeping Dogs quickly went on to become a beloved game with many players. And now, years later, it’s considered one of the best games to come out in the 2010s. But where’s Sleeping Dogs 2?
Well, that’s an age-old question and one that continues to be asked by fans of the game. And it’s not the only sequel that players have been waiting to get released. From Ubisoft’s Beyond Good and Evil 2 to Half-Life: 3, the gaming world is full of incredible games that are yet to see their sequel getting released. So, what’s the matter with Sleeping Dogs 2? Is it even in development?? Well, here’s all the information we have on that.
Sleeping Dogs 2 Release Date: When it will be available
For now, it seems like we will not be getting Sleeping Dogs 2 anytime soon. United Front Games, the developers behind Sleeping Dogs, closed shop years ago in October 2016. And ever since then, the Sleeping Dogs series has never remained untouched. So much so that there haven’t even been any remasters or remakes of Sleeping Dogs in the first place.
The last game that United Front Games was working on before their closure was Triad Wars. The game was an MMO set in the Sleeping Dogs universe, but unfortunately, it got canceled too. As for Sleeping Dogs 2, the game never went into production.
In case you didn’t know, Sleeping Dogs is considered a failure due to its sales. In 2013, Square Enix, the publisher of Sleeping Dogs, issued its annual report. In this report, Square went on to state that (Page 4), “In the HD games category, we delivered three major titles in the fiscal year under review, primarily in Europe and North America. These titles—Sleeping Dogs, Hitman: Absolution, and Tomb Raider—failed to reach their respective targets and resulted in financially unsatisfactory consequences, whereas the HD business in Japan remained strong through sales of the Nintendo 3DS version of Dragon Quest VII: Eden no Senshitachi” (Warriors of Eden) and others.” As you can see by that, Square set an unusually high sales expectation for Sleeping Dogs, and since the game was unable to achieve that target, it was deemed a commercial failure.
Square Enix still holds the rights to the Sleeping Dogs series. While it did sell many of its Western-developed IPs to the Embracer Group, which currently happens to be on a studio closure spree, Square steered clear of letting go of the Sleeping Dogs IP for some reason. Could this mean that Square plans to do something with the series in the near future? Or are they already working on something related to Sleeping Dogs? Well, the answer to those questions is simple: No.
So far, we are yet to hear any kind of leak or rumors related to the release of any games based on the Sleeping Dogs universe. For now, we can say that the Sleeping Dogs series is effectively stored and forgotten away in Square Enix’s vault of dormant series. Only time will tell if Square Enix does something with the series or simply keeps it unused.
