Rogue Legacy is a franchise of platform games in the Metroidvania genre and is widely popular among the platforming community due to its many pioneering features that have changed the genre forever. In this article, we will be taking a look at the possibility of Cellar Door Games working on a third mainline instalment to the Rogue Legacy franchise, presumably titled Rogue Legacy 3, and when it could be coming out. Right, let’s get straight into it.
The first game in the franchise that was made, titled Rogue Legacy, had one of the most peculiar and drawn-out release patterns for any game in the platforming community. The game was initially released for Microsoft Windows on June 27, 2013. After this, the game was adapted to Linux, OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iOS, in that order. The game experienced a release cycle that lasted an unbelievable six years and one month. It is hard to imagine that this was the plan at Cellar Door Games, the more likely reason behind it was the fans of the game calling for it to be adapted to various different platforms.
However, the fact that the developers at Cellar Door games were almost eternally working on adapting the original game for various different platforms did not stop them from also working on a sequel. Currently, Rogue Legacy 2 is in early access and has been since August 18, 2020. The plan is to have the game complete a year in early access and release the full game sometime after. Assuming Cellar Door’s plans have not changed since they first announced them in June 2020, we can expect Rogue Legacy 2 to come out sometime in August or September 2021.
Assuming work on a sequel starts immediately after the release of Rogue Legacy 2, it could still take a good one and a half to two years for the game to finish development, meaning we could be looking at a possible late 2022 to early 2023 release for Rogue Legacy 3.
