Magic:The gathering, if you are into fantasy and are an avid card game lover, you’ve surely heard this name more than once. Often abbreviated as MTG, it is a large congregation of fantasy geeks who keep updating their cards and game databases to provide a comprehensive and “story-line” based experience to its players.
Recently, MTG announced its new set of strixhaven cards and needless to say, this announcement has created a wave of anticipation among the wizards of MTG. Everyone is on the edge of their seats, trying to gleam what they can about the cards which are scheduled to arrive soon.
If you’re not too familiar with MTG and are confused as to the recent developments, read on, for it is never too late to catch up.
MTG came out in 1997, Several video games based on “Magic: The Gathering” franchise exist for multiple systems. Some have attempted to translate the card game to electronic play nearly exactly; others have taken more liberties and drawn more from the setting than the actual rules of the card game.
The game takes place in the plane of Shandalar, where the player must progressively duel with and defeat 5 wizards, each of whom represent 5 colours.
Ever since the original video game in 1997, the game has evolved and given birth to a widely appreciated online version and the most recent version of the game, MTG:ARENA, is a free to play MMORPG which is gaining momentum quickly as an “easy to stream” and dynamic game.
There have been no significant Strixhaven leaks but there is a lot of lore and material to go through in the promotional announcement WotC has released. From the announcement, it’s known that Strixhaven will be set in an elite university of magic users. There are rumours that the blue-eyed aligned planeswalker, Kasmina is going to be central to the story of Strixhaven: School of Mages. Kasmina was originally introduced in 2019’s War of the Spark set.
Strixhaven: School of Mages is going to be the second Standard-legal MTG set WotC is planning to release in the year 2021. The first announcement for Strixhaven originally came in September 2020 and fans been anticipating its release ever since. This is going to be the 87th Magic Expansion set. A release date has not been announced as such, but there is a general consensus that it will come out in the second quarter of 2021.
We can also expect a lot of Harry Potter references, as the MTG universe takes heavy inspiration from JK Rowling’s world of wizardry. Keep an eye out on the sky, the mages are not far behind.
