MechWarrior 5 Clans Keybinds not saving issue How to fix

MechWarrior 5: Clans has been the latest release in the mech combat genre, a space dominated by towering robots, tactical warfare, and intense battlefield scenarios. The genre has a dedicated fanbase, and with this latest title, expectations were high for the next big step in mech gaming. While MechWarrior 5: Clans has been a hit for many, others have faced a wave of frustrating technical issues, turning excitement into disappointment. One of these issues is the keybinds not saving properly issue. If you too are encountering the same, keep reading till the end for some guidance on how to fix this problem.

Well, every time you launch the game, your custom key settings revert to default, forcing you to reconfigure your controls from scratch, isn’t it? This issue becomes a significant problem in a game as complex as MechWarrior 5: Clans, where controls can make or break the battlefield experience. Reconfiguring settings before each session is time-consuming and can even throw you off from starting a new session all over again. Well, let’s see how it could be fixed.

MechWarrior 5 Clans Keybinds not saving issue: How to fix?

MechWarrior 5 Clans Keybinds not saving issue How to fix

Here is the good news! The development team behind MechWarrior 5: Clans is fully aware of the issues players are experiencing, including the keybindings not saving problem. In a recent update, they reassured players that they are actively working on a fix, with Hotfix 2 expected to be released early next week. This upcoming patch will focus on addressing various performance issues, co-op fixes, and controller-related bugs, including the keybinding save issue. In the meantime, the developers have provided a temporary workaround to help alleviate the frustration. Below, we’ll walk through the steps to manually prevent your keybindings from resetting, along with another fix for inverting the Y-axis on joysticks.

Workaround for Keybindings Not Saving

Until Hotfix 2 is released, you can manually save your keybinding preferences by adjusting the game’s configuration file. Here’s how:

  • After setting your keybindings in-game, exit the game entirely.
  • Open File Explorer.
  • Click the address bar at the top and paste one of the following locations, depending on your platform:
    • Steam or Epic Games:
      • %localappdata%\MW5Clans\Saved\Config\Windows\
    • Game Pass or Microsoft Store:
      • %localappdata%\MW5Clans\Saved\Config\WinGDK\
  • Press Enter to open the folder. Here, find the GameUserSettings.ini file.
  • Right-click on the file and select Properties.
  • Under the General tab, check the box next to Read-only.
  • Click OK to save the changes.

By doing this, you are making sure that the keybind changes you made are locked in and won’t be overwritten when you restart the game. Restart the game again and see if this fixes the issue.

Workaround for Inverting Joystick Y-Axis

If you’re having trouble inverting the Y-axis on your joystick, here is what you need to do:

  • Open File Explorer and paste the appropriate path mentioned above for Steam/Epic or Game Pass/Microsoft Store.
  • Locate and open the GameUserSettings.ini file using Notepad.
  • Look for the following line:
    • InvertJoystickYAxis=False
  • Change the setting to:
    • InvertJoystickYAxis=True

Finally, save the file, close Notepad, and then restart the game.

With those developer-suggested workarounds, we hope that you were able to solve some of the controller issues in MechWarrior 5 Clans until a hotfix fixes it once and for all.
