Unfortunately, there is no official fix or a one-size-fits-all workaround right now. Each player’s experience may vary, and what works for one person might not work for you. Still, here are some potential fixes that have helped players fix the issue. While these solutions aren’t guaranteed to resolve every problem, they offer a good starting point.

Restart the Deck

Starting with the simplest solution, power off your Steam Deck. Wait a few moments before turning it back on. After restarting, launch the game again to see if the problem persists. If you are lucky, this will fix the issue for you!

Check for Game Updates

Make sure your game is up-to-date. There are already issues with some AMD GPUs that the developers have acknowledged. So, they may have released patches and updates to fix bugs and improve performance. Just open Steam, head to your library, and see if an update is available for the game. Always keep the game updated.

Set Launch Options

You might need to set a custom launch option to optimize the game for the Steam Deck. For this, in the “General” tab of the game’s Properties menu, enter the “SteamDeck=1 %command%” command into the “Launch Options” textbox. This tweak could potentially improve compatibility and performance, fixing the problem that you are facing.

Verify Files

Corrupted or missing game files can often be the culprit behind game crashes and performance issues. Verify files to check for this from your Steam library. Just head over to your Steam Library, go to the KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX tile, and press the Option button. Now, select “Properties”. Then, open the “Local Files” tab and click the “Verify Integrity of Game Files” option. Steam will check for any missing or corrupted files and replace them, which might solve your problem.

Proton fix (For Epic Games version)

Another fix involves using ProtonGE version 7–13 to run the game. It has been reported to work well. For this workaround, follow these steps:

  • Start by heading to the game’s installation folder and renaming the “EPIC” folder to “EPIC.bak”.
  • Instead of launching the game through the Kingdom Hearts launcher, add the executable of the actual game directly to Steam.
  • Additionally, you can run the executable in Desktop mode to avoid stuttering and reduce frame drops.

Try Other Proton Versions

Using a different proton version can also get rid of the issue. So, to try a different Proton version, head over to the game’s properties menu via Steam, then go to the “Compatibility” tab. Checkmark the box that says “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” and select a different Proton version from the dropdown menu. Try experimenting with different versions to find the most stable one for your game. You can start with Proton Experimental.

Reinstall the Game

If all else fails, reinstalling the game might be necessary. Sometimes, a fresh installation can fix persistent issues that other methods cannot. While reinstalling, just make sure to install the game on the Deck’s internal storage.

With those workarounds, we hope that you were able to run Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX on your Steam Deck.
