The November 2023 patch for Heroes of the Storm breathed new life into the game. Fans of the game are, of course, filled with excitement, as many believe this to be a sign that Blizzard is testing the waters for the game’s revival. Blizzard Entertainment stopped the active development for Heroes of the Storm in July 2022, so it’s only evident that players would look at this patch with unbridled excitement. But obviously, with 2024 coming, many now want to know if the game is truly dead.
All multiplayer games end at some point. However, many do survive after the official shutdown, mostly due to community efforts. MMORPGs are really popular when it comes to that. So what’s the status of Heroes of the Dead? Is anybody still playing this game? Well, continue reading to find out!
Is Heroes of the Storm Dead (2024)
No, it doesn’t seem that Heroes of the Steam is dead. As we stated earlier, Blizzard ended active development of the game in July 2022. Ever since then, the game has been in maintenance mode. But the November 2023 patch has seen a resurgence in player interest. Even before the patch, Heroes of the Storm enjoyed a good number of active players. After all, the game is just in maintenance mode, not shutdown.
There’s also the recent Activision-Blizzard acquisition. Now that the companies are under new management, many players are hopeful that this will result in something good for Heroes of the Storm. In fact, Xbox head Phil Spencer has been very keen on reviving IPs, provided there’s the right team for that. In an interview with Windows Central, Spencer went on to state the following:
“In the case of Blizzard games specifically, really what I’d want to do is work with Blizzard’s leadership to see where they have passion. I say all this, but I’m not at all suggesting that Blizzard doesn’t have passion for reviving franchises too; I know that from my visits to the team. They absolutely have the passion in this area. There’s a lot of excitement for possibilities that we can all do together. But also, I want our fans and customers to know that I don’t bring up games just to tease to no end … if people have watched how we’ve teased things in the past. There’s usually some kind of reconciliation of those hints later on … I’m not one to try and lead people on. It might not happen on the timeline that people would love, but usually when I tease, there’s something there.”
The acquisition has many Xbox fans excited, as there’s now at least some possibility that some old and unsupported IPs might just get revived. And this recent patch for Heroes of the Storm could be a sign of just that. However, there is a high chance that it doesn’t mean anything at all. Only time will tell what Blizzard and Xbox’s plans are for Heroes of the Storm.
If you are tired of playing Riot’s League of Legends or Valve’s DOTA 2, give Heroes of the Storm 2 a chance. The community is fairly active, and you will have tons of fun in the game. And don’t worry about Blizzard shutting down the official servers anytime soon. While active development in terms of new content might have stopped, you will still be able to play the game as it is.
