Mediatonic’s Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout was one of the few games that got a huge following during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multiplayer or co-op games were raking in a huge number of players, and the effect was so potent that it not only saved Among Us from shutting down but also turned the game into a worldwide phenomenon in mere months. Fall Guys, too, was released during these wild times. Now that the pandemic is gone, 2024 is just around the corner, and many are starting to wonder if Fall Guys will shut down next year.
No multiplayer game can live on forever. One day or another, developers will decide to shut down servers and move on to a new project. However, that only happens when the developers feel like a game is not worth supporting anymore. There are many age-old titles that are still running and earning a good amount of revenue. Just take a look at Final Fantasy XIV, Guild Wars 2, Eve Online, Warframe, and such titles. Suffice it to say, it’s all about having a decent player base and steady revenue. So, what about Fall Guys? Is it shutting down in 2024? Continue reading to find out!
Is Fall Guys Shutting down in 2024? Everything you need to know?
It is very unlikely that Fall Guys will be shutting down in 2024. Why? Well, there are facts that say the same. Compared to how popular the game was during its launch, these days, Fall Guys doesn’t seem to be capable of reaching that high of a level. After Epic acquired Tonic Games Group in 2021, Fall Guys shifted to a free-to-play model the following year, on June 21, 2022. That’s not all, though. It also became available on current-gen consoles and the Switch. However, the Steam version of the game was delisted, and it became an exclusive Epic Store title. Now, if you take a look at the game’s Steam Chart before it shifted to Epic, you will see that the average player count was mostly below 20k–30k. The only time it broke the 100k player count was at the time of its launch in August 2020. Ever since then, the player count has always been in freefall.
The bad news doesn’t end there, though. In September of this year, Epic was hit by a massive layoff. While the true numbers are yet to be known, Tim Sweeney, Epic Games CEO, stated that the company was laying off around 830 employees in total. Some of them happened to be people from Mediatonic. Sweeney also stated,
“About two-thirds of the layoffs were in teams outside of core development.”
As for Fall Guys, the FAQ section of that statement mentioned the following:
“We aren’t cutting any core businesses and are continuing to invest in games with Fortnite first-party development, the Fortnite creator ecosystem and economy, Rocket League and Fall Guys; and services for developers including Unreal Engine for games and enterprise, Epic Games Store, Epic Games Publishing, Epic Online Services, Kids Web Services, MetaHuman, Twin Motion, Quixel Mega Scans, Capturing Reality, ArtStation, Sketchfab and Fab.”
Suffice it to say, Epic still has faith left in Fall Guys. But faith can only get you so far in this cutthroat era of video games. The game is still chasing its early success, but only time will tell how far it can go. For now, Epic has no plans to shut down Fall Guys, but that isn’t going to be the case forever if the game doesn’t get its numbers up soon.
