Huawei has been cut from using GMS (Google Mobile Services) since May 2019. Its when the Trump Administration acted on suspicions that Huawei devices can spy on their users. With close ties to the Chinese Government and other shady business accusations, a ban was inevitable. The U.S Department of Commerce put Huawei on an ‘Entity List’ along with other Chinese companies that were now banned to do any business transaction with any U.S based company. As a result, Google had to cut off ties with Huawei completely.
Huawei has tried to fill the hole left by the absence of GMS by introducing its own alternatives. Huawei Gallery app is the alternative to the Google Play Store on which Huawei released the Huawei Petal app. Initially, when it launched in June last year, the purpose of the Petal app was to provide APK files of popular apps which were not available yet on the Gallery app. But with updates and new features, the Petal app has now turned into a full-blown search engine app.
Now, you can not only find apps but you can also use the Petal app as a normal search engine. You can ask regular queries or search for the latest news, videos and music too. You can also look for shopping websites or book flights with the help of the new Huawei Petal search engine.Just like Google Search, you can add a widget to your home screen for quickly searching questions or finding your apps.
Huawei recently updated the Petal search engine with a few new improvements. The app has received a complete overhaul to its UI. Its been made more simpler and easy to use. The Petal assistant is now going to provide users recommendations on the basis of the user’s activities. Now, on Huawei Petal App,the user can easily search for local services like restaurants, gas stations. Etc. The company also added the feature to display the webpages that you have recently visited.
The company is furthermore going to add support for its digital assistant Celia to compete with Google Assistant. This will make Huawei more and more independent from Google and with HarmonyOS stable release coming soon, just in a few years Huawei could become independent from Google Services.
